So I found this range on eBay that was overheating so decided to go for it. Offered the guy £2k and he accepted so I'm happy with that. Looks pretty decent interior wise and comfortable although the seats not quite my taste but I can live with them.












So anyways decided that I would start looking into any obvious signs of head gasket failure. Oil seems nice and clean with no creamy solution found, nothing on the dip stick, coolant is low but seems like it's been changed, no obvious leaks, Once it was jump started, starts up straight away on the first turn, it runs like a dream with plenty of power but the temp gauge soon goes up. If its left idle it takes a while to overheat.

Only abnormality I found was the wiring to the coolant bottle is a bit perished so I'll get this replaced. Battery appears somewhat small but also very dead at 4volts so first job is get the battery on charge for the night and see what happens with that so I can at least get a scanner on it. I've got the iid tool so I'll need too add this one too it next. Hopefully with the battery charged up I'll get some more information on it.

All depends on how handy you are with the spanners I guess mate. If your competent with them then they can be cheap cars to run if you can ignore the fuel bill.

First thing is find out what's going on with the battery. If its just dead and holds charge I'll be able too investigate it further. I did notice the brake light and abs light was on the dash board so need to check that out.

First thing i would do is to bleed the coolant system of air... Them blooming SC's don't half like air locking in the coolant system! Played with one for nigh on 3 hours the other week before it would stop overheating and throwing its coolant out...

I concur, had a nightmare bleeding mine recently, resorted to having to remove thermostat housing and header tank and using hose

What's the score gents with doing the bleeding. Any tips on how too do it?

I'll start with all the stuff that's free first I think but I'm going to order a sniff test from ebay and see what that comes back with.

As far as problematic coolant system bleeding, the answer may be to use a vacuum tool, found this link for BMW engines using a tool from Schwaben, but there are lots of kits available. Only problem you could have is not having a compressed air supply.

I've been very lucky with mine on both occasions I've bled it. I followed the manual to a tee and it seemed to pay off.

Have you checked for flow from the water pump? With the ignition only on, can you hear the electric coolant pump behind the passengers side headlight running?

Genuine LR thermostats are only around 30 quid and it's an easy job to change.

Things like the water pump and thermostat I'll just change them anyways so I know its done so its peace of mind as well for me. Just need to get the hands dirty one weekend and look at how to replace the pump and thermo stat

To get into the water pump you'll need to remove the fan and shroud, the shroud is a bit of a pain and the manual says to remove the air con pipe but you can manipulate it out of the way to lift the shroud up. I ordered a viscous fan spanner from PowerfulUK when I did mine.

Thermostat can be done very easily and quickly without tearing anything else apart

If you're taking all the belts off the front, it'd be worth replacing the bearings in the pulleys so you don't have to go back in there. I had all of mine apart earlier in the year, shout if I can give you any pointers!

Well well well what do we have here then too look at. Battery been on charge for 24 hours however soon as I took it off charge it dropped 1v within a few mins however when it was connected to the terminals no power what so ever. Managed to jump started it of my impreza battery. Started up straight away and tool maybe 20 mins to get to temp at around 96°c. I'm guessing the thermostat opens up here as it started to drop in temp down to 90°c for a few mins then it went upto 120°c. Turned the car off however no fan spinning throughout the whole lot so first starting point is new battery and to investigate why the fan isn't engaging. Topped up with some water too see if there's any obvious leaks however that's staying at the same level. Had this fault code appear. I know its not an iid unit but it normally pics up the basics till I get the gap unit sorted

Battery charging at 14.8v so that's a good sign at least.

Could well be just the viscous fan clutch failed, result if so, good luck

Having bled my SC system twice in six years I park the vehicle with the front higher than the rear and left overnight with header tank cap off. Worked both times. Good luck.

Good shout that one mate. Think I'll give that a try soon. Just been out and bought a new battery from halfrauds however as I'm not even home yet n I started work at 5am I'll pass on fitting it tonight how ever I did read up a failing ecm can result in a few of my symptoms but can easily be sorted by a new battery. Needs replacing anyways so no headache either way
