Air suspension overnight 'settling'

I've looked as best I can through the threads but if this has been covered before I apologise, however...
I have a 25k mile '17 4.4SDV8 which when left overnight (on level ground) seems to settle at a low level, lower than the usual Access Height, especially at the front. It rises fine on start up and drives fine. The car is covered by a comprehensive warranty which covers air suspension faults, so I intend to book it in to be looked at, but thought to ask prior if it's a known problem (or indeed if it's a problem at all). I attach a photo which hopefully shows what's happening. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

That looks about right to me, mine goes right down so the tyres are just inside the top of the wheel arches.. The car should always be left in Access Height as you probably know and if it rises and drives ok then there shouldn't be a problem. All LR cars from 1984

Thanks Chalky - to be honest I assumed that if there was a problem it would flag up on the warning lamps/messages (which it hasn't). I only recently acquired this car and it's just that I don't recall my previous L405 settling quite this low when parked. I always have the 'access height' activated for all the reasons you and others mention.

If there is a major air suspension issue it will rear its head soon enough....with either sagging to one side or when one of the airbags pop while you're driving (ask me how I know....on my L322 hahah)

How do you like those SVO style side gills? I was considering those but went with the face-lift 4 slat gills. Are those OEM, hows the fitment/color match to the stock bright atlas. 2014 FF Autobiography 5.0 SC

Hi this is not normal, the car should stay at the height you left it over night.
My SD 4.4 did this.
It was a faulty suspension valve block.
Dealer replaced and all good now, stays where you leave it.

405's almost always drop overnight... Just as Chalky said above, leave them in access height is the best bet... Thumbs Up

Agreed. I never buy into this leave it in access mode when you get out shpeal. The suspension is finicky enough and an area of likely repair whether it be the bags or comprsssor or block etc. why put even more added unneeded wear. I’ve never owned a RR that didn’t need suspension work atleast once.

Curious how much did the dealer charge to replace the valve block? Did they replace with the upgraded part? 2014 FF Autobiography 5.0 SC

My car must be unusual then never dropped down overnight for five years.
Now valve block replaced back to being the same as last five years never drops over night .
Can leave car for weeks without starting does not drop.
must be just lucky!

All the best.

What is your year/model of your 4.4? I have a 2014 L405 5.0L SC Autobio. I assume same part? that’s a lot more reasonable than I have heard in the past. I have heard several thousand. I wonder how hard of a DIY this would be

I occasionally get a “vehicle lean while cornering” error. And my suspension sometimes “dances” at startup after sitting overnight like it’s trying to figure itself out. I’m thinking my block in the culprit 2014 FF Autobiography 5.0 SC

My year model is 2014 SD 4.4 Autobiography SWB . I think it is somewhere under front wheel trim cover area .
Thats what they told me.
I don't think it would be brain surgery to change this valve block.
However I really don't know, you would need the workshop manual.
I have just spent a small fortune getting them to trouble shoot DAB Radio fault, plus service 84 month service.
It has taken months, new rear spoiler $1900,
Aerial roof mounted $144,
Receiver radio $1800,
Receiver Radio $2000
The $12000 that makes up this part is mainly labour trouble shooting.
They have fixed it!Though very expensive Radio that will be obsolete if we get Satellite radio here one day.
But being an aircraft engineer it has to work or I slowly go insane.

The valve block is located behind the NSF wheel up under the sill trim…

I have 3-4-5 405’s here at a time and they all drop at a similar rate! If not left in access mode, maybe 3-4 days and they will be on the floor… hence me calling it “normal behaviour”

My car has had the front suspension replaced in its entirety by JLR warranty (banging, floaty ride) and still it drops over 2-3 days onto her bump stops…

322’s from 09> do the same thing… Ford era 322’s don’t! But all RR’s from 09 onwards that sit here, all do the same thing!

Hi All,

I’m new to this forum but am active elsewhere on the interweb.

I have a ‘17 Auto 4.4 v8 and have the same problem that the OP has reported, so much so that I recently booked the car in to have it looked at by JLR in South London.

After having it for a day, they told me their techs couldn’t find anything wrong with it (had it ‘up in the air’) and had all four corners inspected. I told them that it normally takes 2-3 days of sitting in the garage for it to drop pretty much to the bump stops so they agreed to take it for 4-5 days.

Well, after about the 8th day they called and said they checked it 2-3 times a day and couldn’t measure any drop whatsoever but mentioned that they updated the suspension software and topped up the DRF as the tank was pretty much empty. After collection, I thought ‘great, they’ve fixed the issue and I’ll never have to worry about it again’. Well, I put it in the garage and before I even had a chance to lock it the rear suspension valve block opened and the rear suspension dropped.

I’m literally tearing my hair out as I can’t figure out if their is ‘normal’ behaviour. I’m thinking of replacing the valve blocks myself as they seem pretty cheap (~£100) and I want to rule them out but I’m not really sure how to fit them; are there any instructions anywhere?

Edit: I should mention that I’ve had the car since Nov last year and I’ve never had any warnings on the dash

All of the air suspension RRs I have owned (2000 P38 4.6, L322 2004 4.4 and 2012 4.4 TDV8 and 2017 L405) did this eventually, it got more pronounced with age. I had one airbag replaced, on the 2004 car, when it split while the wheels were hanging down on the dealer workshop ramp, but otherwise just lived with it. When the 2004 car was maybe nine years old and over 90,000 miles it got quite bad, with it taking quite a while for the car to get up to height, but once it did so it drove well enough (subject to all the other issue that affected that car). My 405 is just starting to do it now. Maybe the airbags get a bit porous with age, or seals lose tightness, and leak tiny amounts that one hardly notices normally?

I'm planning just to live with it, unless it gets really severe, or affects driving. Only Range Rovers since 1988
