Help!! Stuck in France with big boat on the Back! Horrible r

Hi all.. 2003 td6..
Any suggestions greatful.
Collected a boat from South France.. Heading for Calais.. Got as far as Paris almost.
Horrible rattle from underneath car, unhooked the boat to make sure it is the car.. It is.
Symptoms: metallic rattle, in gear or out of gear.. I may be able to make a video as soon as all these trucks leave the rest area it's rammed here. (they can't drive Sundays).
Also, gearbox seems a bit clunky now, in and out of gear.
Have massive headache too... What a stressful time!

Regards
Jon

To note: I noticed the noise very slightly a couple hours ago. Noise was louder when changing to higher gear. Engine sounds fine.
Could it be gearbox failing? Do they rattle when on way out?
Thanks

try and get a look underneath, it might be something as simple as the exhaust or exhaust covers rattling..
stick it in off road and leave a door open so it doesn't go down but be careful.. ... - .- -.

Hi.. Thanks for reply..
I just went underneath but really dangerous with trucks the way I've had to park.
I took my rubber mallet and had a knock around. When I knock the driveshaft, it sounds like almost a bell. Could it be drive shaft?
Good idea about off road mode! I'll look again...

Just been under again.. All the drive shafts sound the same when I hit them so prob not drive shaft.
Can't wait for all these trucks to disappear! Then I have so much space to unhitch and locate the noise.

Hi..
Thanks for reply..
So, what were your symptoms? I'm sure I've lost a bit of power too.. Hard to tell with 3.5T in the back.
Did yours make the loud rattle?
Thanks

That sounds very much like CV joint to me or possibly a UJ on propshaft, only from experience on other cars not RR. I'm sure others will advise shortly.

Good luck. BMW i3 Electric Car

Between the front driveshaft and the rear of the gearbox there is a rubber doughnut joint. I'd be inclined to see if it is still intact and the bolts are tight and in place. Thumbs Up

Hi ... Thanks for the replies..

I've been rescued. At a rescue depot now.

I'll try to have a look again underneath...Check that rubber seal. Although now it's in the hands of a French mechanic and AA breakdown cover! Scary.
Just to note, gearbox not slipping. Changes gear OK.
Just that awful clonking.

I'll second the CV joint, sounds exactly like my old defender when it's CV broke. Could be a Universal Joint / doughnut in the prop shaft but they spin much faster and usually are felt as a vibration once your at up to speed.

I really hope they can get the parts and fix it for you, getting relayed home in the UK is bad enough - takes hours, especially waiting for handovers because of driving time limits.

Good luck, fingers crossed for you. Anything can be made to work if you fiddle with it long enough (and have deep pockets|)

Sorry.
Cant help with your dilemma. However I had a sound very similar to that a good few years back, it was only a large stone in the steel brake shield between disc and motor. Is the sound still there when stationary? If not maybe worth a look.

Good luck Thumbs Up

It could possibly be the rear propshaft centre bearing has gone. The rubber surround on the bearing perishes / splits and you get a lot of noise and vibration when moving. You did mention that when you hit the propshaft it rang like a bell, so it could be that the rubber has totally gone, causing the clatter we could hear on the video. Towing a large boat may have put enough stress on the propshaft to cause the final failure of the bearing.

May I suggest you join the french group and tell them where you are. there may be a local that could help, even if it is already at the garage.

I can't add anything that the others haven't already.

Hopefully it's nothing to serious and you get to finish your journey off fairly quickly.
