steering column gaiter

the other day i was looking at my disintegrated under bonnet rubbers in the engine compartment when i noticed the gaiter at the bottom of the steering column had a split in it .
on closer inspection it looks like gaiter had 'dried' out causing the splits ..

i phoned landrover warranty and was told that any vat registered garage would be able to do the warranty job.

as my son has a garage , i asked him to try and get authorisation for the work which he successfully did..

FF should be done on friday ...

@Kev..i normally wouldnt have looked down there but by chance i did ,luckily..let us know what condition yours is..

@Pete...wife wants a new car so she gets priority and mine is a lovely vehicle....

@Rob...i think i'll stick with a garage that can update the LR online service records for the moment but certainly warranty work wil be done by my son..funny enough he is doing more LR stuff..he has a disco sport in at the moment..

@Craig..would love for you to do the work but family comes first and the more work my son does the better he will be financially to look after me in my older age..
the gaiter looks OE so would that still be chinese? ... - .- -.

Ah, mate I totally understand...

I was just giggling to myself last night about all the stories I hear of people doing friends and family some great deals, only to be blamed 6 months later for a totally unrelated issue! Thumbs Up

Good stuff Stan. Did you happen to notice any issues with steering/performance generally prior to spotting this? L405 4.4 AB Loire Blue

Great news that your son sorted it for you Stan.

I went out and checked mine the other day, but I couldn't see it. It doesn't help being a short arse, but I was wondering if it's more visible in the V6 engine bay than the V8 one. Kev

the 3.0 engine is like a sewing machine motor compared to the 4.4...i would certainly try some kind of mirror contraption or from underneath if you are able to take the skid pan off .. ... - .- -.

If it was “dried out”,
I used to have a tin of purple coloured grease that was designed specifically to prevent rubber drying out and perishing , particularly from sunlight.
Sadly I can’t remember it’s name, other than it was made by Castrol.
Might be worth a bit of Googling ??

Good idea Stan. I'll be doing an oil change in a couple of months so I'll take a peek then as I'm a 'drop it from underneath' man. Kev
