Electrochromatic Mirrors Constantly Dimmed

I noticed last night when moving the SC on the driveway that I could barely see a thing in the rear view mirror or either of the wing mirrors.

A closer look revealed that they had dimmed themselves and you could see the green tint on them if you looked very closely.

As soon as you switch the car off the green tint disappears as they revert back to normal and you can see again.

I put my finger over the sensor on the back of the mirror and it made no difference so I think there's something that I need to have a look at.

Has anybody experienced this or know of a cure? Can you look at the input for the dimming mirrors using the IID tool?

Thanks,

I changed mine because of that. It was so bad to reverse in the dark. I understood that it supposed to like that they go "black" in the dark. And if the are too old/startto die, it gets worse- dark yellow most of the time.

It's a pain in the dark, isn't it!

Mine has the factory tints on the rear windows too so looking out at night is nigh on impossible!

If these packed in all together I'd probably get rid of them but the dimming feature does seem to work as they sort themselves out when you switch the car off.

My passenger side mirror has gradually turned to a sepia colour, is this the same thing as your seeing or another issue?

When the car detects someone following you it will dim the interior mirror and both door mirrors to stop the light dazzling you. When it does this the mirrors go a sort of green colour and when the lights stop being picked up the glass goes clear again.

When my car is switched off the glass is clear but as soon as you start it, the glass goes green.

I think something is leading the car to think there's lights behind it all the time so it's dimming the mirrors.

David, sir yourself in the car and cover the little dot in the mirror glass, centre top??? Does this send them back clear? That sensor is the one that detects cars approaching from the rear! They are particularly sensitive to your interior lights! Second thing to try is a small torch and shine it on the sensor on the rear side of the mirror (remembering to turn off your interior lights!)... Does that work?

Thanks for the suggestions, Craig. I'll give them a try when it's back from it's MOT Thumbs Up

Blanking the sensor on the front of the mirror doesn’t seem to make any difference but shining the light from my phone on the rear of the mirror does make them all go back to being clear again.

Driving it in daylight with the lights switched off it doesn’t seem to do it, its only when it goes dark.

I need too try and get this sorted as now it's constantly dark, reversing is a nightmare.

I checked it again the other day and noticed that shining a torch on the sensor on the back of the mirror does seem to cancel the dimming feature on them and return the mirrors to normal.

Could it be something as simple as the interior mirror being at fault?

Thanks,

I changed the rear view mirror on my car today and I don’t think it’s resolved the issue. I’ve not driven it yet but when starting it after a few seconds the mirrors dimmed again like before.

I’m now wondering where to turn next as after reading the workshop manual I was under the impression that the rear view mirror controlled the dimming.

Just to close this out... changing my mirror has in fact resolved this issue.

When you go into reverse the mirrors are now un dipping and going clear. There's a sodium light on our driveway which send it into dipped mode but when going into reverse it now clears so it looks like that's another issue ticked off the list Smile
