First step today was to find my vacuum leak. With the help of the fog machine, it turned out to be the orings on the PCV valve. I could hear it in that general area so that’s been confirmed. I tried replacing the orings on it with some I had on the shelf and it’s better but not perfect so I’m going to order a PCV from Rob tomorrow.

I used a rubber pipe from the nozzle on the fog machine to the inlet manifold. I took a rubber glove, cut the finger off it and taped it to the pipe and put the glove over the air intake. With the ignition on and the throttle wide open after a couple of squirts of fog I could see a small amount around the orings.

After the vacuum leak was found I moved onto servicing the gearbox.

I drained the oil out and found it was very low on oil and the electrical sleeve was wet so it was due a good going over.

I started off with replacing the bridge adapter and the 4 rubber dowel like seals. The old ones were flat as a pancake and the new ones protrude nicely so that was a worthwhile change. The bridge adapter wasn’t as flat as I was expecting but it wasn’t as good as the new one.



I then turned my attention to the solenoids on the valve block. I’d put a plastic sheet down on the bench to keep the valve block clean but it served to catch the oil too which was helpful!



First step was to remove the electronics unit from the valve body.



The bar that holds the solenoids in place was then removed.



And then replacing the solenoids was a very straight forward job.








When I was removing the sump I thought it had been done before as it had the bigger T40 torx screws in it which I thought was a later thing but the date stamp on the sump was 2006 so it’s a long overdue service.



It took more oil then the 7 litres I had so I need to order another couple of litres from Rob this week too.

Now you have swapped all the solenoids do you plan on resetting the gearbox adaptations. not sure if it’s a good thing to do or not. Might be worth an email to those in the know. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I’ve read mixed feelings online about doing it after just doing an oil and filter change on the box.

It does seem to be recommended after doing the solenoids though so I am going to reset them before I drive it out of the workshop.

Fingers crossed. I bought this one at the right price so don’t mind doing the work to it and I guess I’m not doing anything other then a major service so I could have had to do all this on a car I’d paid retail money for.

I noticed when it was running today that the bearings in the Supercharger sound noisy and not particularly nice so I’m going to speak to Powerhouse tomorrow and see about getting a rebuild kit for that whilst the car is in the workshop.

I’m not really interested in chasing faults forever so want to do everything whilst it’s in bits and then we can hopefully enjoy it once it’s done. Smile

That’s a fine looking motor you’ve got yourself and sounds like you’ll have it well sorted by the time your done spannering. Keep us updated how the gearbox performs as that’s a job I’m for doing shortly along with the belts, idlers and tensioner on my tdv8, but the cost was putting me off atm so great tip about swapping the bearings Thumbs Up

It's definitely worth changing the bearings separately from the pulleys if the pulleys are in good condition. It cost me less then 20 quid in bearings and less than 30 minutes to refit them.

If you don't need the car for a few days, it's definitely a cost effective way of doing it. I ordered my bearings from Bearing King on a Sunday evening, they were dispatched first thing Monday morning and delivered on Tuesday. That was just normal first class post so the Royal Mail must have been on the ball that day.

GrunbterNI i am having my 4.4 TDV8 belts and pullies done i have also got a new water pump which is being done too (nothing wrong with the current one, but you know with all the new stuff the bearing in the pump will fail shortly after). it is a pig of a job and lucky for me the dealer is paying the £300 + VAT labour costs. As i cannot see well enough i have elected not to change just the bearings so ordered all new. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Hi David,

What bearings did you order (P/N) from Bearing Kings?

Also, when my car’s previous owner had the gearbox repaired under warranty, they couldn’t have reset the adaptations and the box thuncked from first to second. I actually thought it could have been the propshaft. Anyway, I did the oil service and it made little difference so I reset the values and it’s perfectly smooth now.

These are the bearings I bought:

When I cleaned the old ones up you could see the 6203 marking on them quite clearly.

These are right for my car with the 4.2 engine but am unsure if they're the same for the others so best to check and be sure.

Great work David.
Pleased I read it all today, one of my pulleys is screaming like a strangled cat & needs doing.
Is there much to strip off to remove the pulleys?

Although mines a tdv8, anyone know if the pulleys are metal or plastic?

On the Supercharged there's the viscous fan, fan shroud and both belts.

Yours is a 4.4 TDV8, the same as our other one. We've got a noisy bearing on that one too and there appears to be a lot less room to get in at it.

Once this SC is finished, I might try and get a look at the other one and see what's what Smile

It’s pretty easy to strip enough space out on the 4.4 to get at some of the belt pulleys and tensioner on the 4.4 David, the squeeze is getting the belts on and off round different things. I have tackled the tensioner and a pulley but by all accounts the belts do come off without major quantities of swear words being spent.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

TJH they are all plastic. the bearings are serviceable too if you are inclined it is possible to press them out and press in new ones if you have the kit. this will save you a good few quid too. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current
