The 4.4 tdV8 was specifically designed as a “top down maintenance car” ,

I understand that Mike but as land rover call it "mini sump" I would like to know its purpose as there's a main drain on the side and this which I questioned too.

It’s a drain for turbo pipe I think. Drain it when you drop the oil from main drain. Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Thank you Rob I'll see how much comes out on the next oil change. |

I have to admit to being a convert to sucking the oil out too now.

As previously mentioned it's a drain for the turbo return , drain it at every oil change as it can eventually sludge up and cause turbo oil starvation (very expensive ) as the hot oil can't return to sump , same for 3.6's too , I suck the main sump dry with suction pump then drain the turbo return (a bit messy as it dribbles onto crossmember ) , standard Ford type sump plug and o ring seal , only a couple of quid so replace with a new one . |

I always do exactly this. Having tested it there is only a tiny amount left in the main sump once suctioned out. If you think about the oil elsewhere in the engine that will not all drain out (and the fact there is 10 l in there anyway!!) it is nothing to worry about. I do drop that rear one though as it seems like a good idea to make sure fresh oil flows through the turbo drain. Probably not needed but it makes me happy lol |
