Climate Control Auto Function

I have a query re the climate control operation. When set at Auto it seems to be set in one position, i.e. When it's very cold outside I would expect it to kick in at full blast until interior is warm. If I set blower to Manual and use vent controls it works fine. Is this correct or is something up? Hope I've explained it clearly! 2009 Range Rover Vogue 3.6TDV8, Bournville, Parchment/Navy

It won’t do anything as uncivilised as blow loads of air at you 🤣..... seriously though, if it’s cold and you select hot air, it won’t blow anything until the water warms up, as it will be blowing cold air at you.

I’ve never had mine blow loads when on the auto setting. There is a Max button you can press if you need to do a quick defrost.

If I leave mine on auto, it doesn’t really get warm in the cabin even after 20 mins or so. Have to manually put the blowers on to get any real heat 🤷‍♂️

Thanks guys, that sort of confirms how mine works! The blower is rather timid compared to some, maybe it's as you say " civilised" on my XJ if on Auto it kicks in when cold and gets warm pretty quick, as you both say in the RR on Auto you wait for ages to get warm, never used my heated seats of heated steering wheel so much 😂 2009 Range Rover Vogue 3.6TDV8, Bournville, Parchment/Navy

Make sure that you have the recirculate button pushed at least once, otherwise it will let the cold outside air in.

Although my heating works fine now. I thought that it had stopped working again, until I realised that I had no recirculate lights showing. Pressed once & then it got warm. Very Happy

I can confirm.
It's not the quickest of heaters but if you know what to press, and when, can work okay.
The auto button is not as good as manually putting on blowers and recirculate.

Thanks will try recirculate button, just figuring out the best way of heating as quickly as possible. 2009 Range Rover Vogue 3.6TDV8, Bournville, Parchment/Navy

RC et all, a couple of things to consider here; the majority of RRs are diesel, and diesel takes a whole lot longer to warm up than petrol, and also diesel runs cooler than petrol meaning there is less heat energy to go around. The heater system is obviously designed with this in mind, but diesels always take longer to warm up. The second point is of course the interior volume of a RR. Rear seats aside you've got a decent sized van amount of empty space that needs heating, so unfortunately it'll always take a while.
That said, my own TDV8 was usually plenty warm enough even on the coldest mornings after around 4 or 5 miles. My preferred settings were;
1, A/C on permanently. This may sound counter intuitive but the A/C system dries the air too, which means you don't get a load of moisture blown up onto the windscreen. Just try turning the A/C off on a rainy day with a car full of people and you'll see what I mean. Furthermore, if you don't regularly use the A/C, the rubber 'O' rings on the pipework tend to go hard shrink and crack, thereby allowing all the gas to leak out. And A/C compressors these days are so much more efficient you won't notice any detrimental affect to fuel consumption.
2, Permanently select auto recirc. So the recirc button has 2x circular arrow symbols on it, just make sure the indicator light is above the one with the 'A' in the middle.
3, Press the button on the middle of the fan speed control so the so that both the indicator lights are illuminated; the vertical line and the dot above it.
4, Set the temperature you want.
5, Forget about it, as it'll look after itself. The only time I've ever altered from that is the 'Prog' demist button an icy mornings, or when the Mrs complains that I've got the heater set too cold.....!

MJ, personally I'd er on the side of caution with the wheel on the center face vent. Blowing warm air onto your face is one of the quickest ways to send you to sleep. In fact when Audi used to (Don't know whether it's till the case) build there cars without the facility to blow warm air on your face for exactly that reason. Had several customer complaining that they could only get cool air and it was only after consulting the technical bulletins we discovered why.

I always wondered about that button but the owners manuals is Censored when it comes to information on it. Tell me more...what is "auto recirculation"??? Whistle Bow down Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

I don't really understand why there are two lights on the Auto button, does one control temp and one control fan speed?

I don’t actually put my dial fully red.... so take your point. I was working on getting the cabin hot quick.

The auto recirc will just recycle the air in the cabin, as needed and as the “dodgy air sensor” dictates, so you will just be working with the warmer air in the system, not the cold from outside.

To be fair, as above, I set all mine to auto and let it get on with it. I’ve enough to think about singing to Barry Manilow 🤣

2 lights on the auto button are to signify auto fan speed and auto distribution. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

The Auto recirc is exactly that, it uses a 'sniffer' to monitor air quality that coming into the cabin and automatically opens or closes the flaps to outside. So for example if you were driving through a tunnel full of lorries belching out clouds of exhaust fumes the senor would detect this and close the flaps to atmosphere and just recirculate the air inside the car until the outside air was clean enough to reopen them.
The other 'manual' option is for you to manually select when you want recirc or not. Quite why you have the option to do it manually is beyond me as the auto function does everything you need.
The thing to remember though is that regardless of auto or manual, after around 16 minutes the flaps to outside will reopen to keep the levels of carbon dioxide that we breath out to a safe low level.
