England 2011 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Santorini Black

Hi,
What's the difference in the 2 head units Stan & Baltic posted? Is it just that one is used when DVD is fitted?

The Audio / Video buttons are different, are they bob the same / compatible?

Looks like I need a new unit & both options are on the bay, I have the one like Baltic has & don't want to buy one like stans if it won't work.

Thanks,

@Stan / @Baltic Blue where have you connected the USB cable? I like how its tucked behind clock (Stan) and the unit (Baltic Blue) just want to under stand the power source as I currently have it plugged in the cigarette lighter which is not ideal.

depends if your nav runs on 12v or 5v...if 12v then a piggy back adapter from ebay will suffice ....
if 5v then a reducer will have to be used... ... - .- -.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm wanting to subscribe for notifications and thought I'd add detail to this reply too...

I have a 2011 model with a single-view screen and no DVD option fitted, but it *does* have the DVD button and design as per Stans car.

EDIT: Actually, I just went and rechecked and it is indeed the dualview screen, which I didn't know I had. Definitely no DVD player though Smile

Any progress

Hi, has anyone made any progress on this? I've got a 2012 RR and its annoying how out of date the sat nav is. No point in paying the dealer for 2014 maps. I've read other forums that it might be similar to the Volvo system where you can download updates for free. I'm not interested in a replacement system but would love to be able to make up to date maps etc if we could understand the format.

Cheers James

on the 2005-2009 dvd based nav the 'kwl' file has been hacked and newer mapping added but the hard disc nav cant be accessed ..

the only realistic solution is apple carplay or android auto and then you could use waze or google maps. ... - .- -.

Hi Guy's, just wondering if there was any update on this?

Mine has always said "map data cannot be read" which I read that it could be bad sectors on the hard drive, although running a diagnostics on the hdd shows up no faults.

Anyway, I've ordered a new hdd and intend to remove the head unit and remove the old hdd and copy the data and transfer it to the new hdd to see if this will work.

Then, I will have the data which is stored on the current hdd to have a play about with.

Im not sure that I'll be able to assist regarding connecting through the plug in the fusebox, but I'm sure there will be a way to remove the hdd and put the data on the hdd using a docking station..

I'd be interested in everyones thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance

ASH

*bump*
Just a quick note that the FFRR 2010-2012 HDD based NAV system indeed can be upgraded, even maps changed from one region to another.
Problem is that how is a very closely guarded secret by a number of enterprising individuals that sell updates for a living.
I know how to do it, have updated my own car but I'm not sure how to safely without risking legal complications share the knowledge.

What I can say is that the FW/USB adapter is a wild goose chase as the HDD positively must be taken out of the car, which is a dash off job.
Once out of the car the HDD is unlocked using a universal Master key, and the new maps then loaded via computer onto the HDD.
The maps used are the same as the Volvo MMM2 system, used on some Subarus, Jaguars and even Freelander 2.

Latest maps working without conversion are the 2017/2018 Volvo MMM2 set.

PM for more info

That sounds like a good bit of research, well done. Maybe you could write the procedure hypothetically for a non brand car just to give everyone an idea of what to do so they could do their own research guided by you? Bow down BMW i3 Electric Car

Got a bit of overwhelming replies so decided to share a bit more.
If any of this below is unfamiliar or does not make sense it is because you are then lacking the necessary skills to be able to perform the task, please, do not attempt, ask a friend that knows computers. No, I mean really knows computers. Ask them if they can explain the difference between a nibble and a byte. If they don't know, find someone else.

Tools needed:
Old computer with IDE ports. Not SATA ports. No adapter IDE to SATA or similar will work for the unlock. You need an old computer that has the IDE ports. Sometimes these are also called PATA as in Parallell ATA vs modern Serial ATA. Back in the day they were called IDE ports.
HDAT2 v7.4 - Now this is very powerful DOS based tool. It will destroy the hard disk unless you follow specific instructions. The purpose of this tool is to unlock the drive before map data manipulation. You have to use the Master key which is as I stated before universal to this nav computer irrespective of which car it happened to be used on. See here for a discussion where the key is discussed. https://volvoforums.org.uk/showpost.php?p=...stcount=42 It's the one starting with a 7. See the rest of that linked thread for more details including the padding of x20 characters that are mandatory.

Basically the procedure is:

    Take out the hard drive
Unlock it on that old computer using the master key, with padding
MAKE A SECTOR BASED BACKUP FIRST TIME THE DISK IS CONNECTED TO OLD COMPUTER - you may need to use it if you mess up.
Perform the map data manipulation needed, either upgrading the existing map region, or if you want to go deeper in the rabbit hole (another IT nerd reference) you can also change the region of the car but that requires yet more tools.
Put drive back in car. The nav computer will auto-lock it back so that any additional map manipulation you may need to perform will have to start with doing the unlock step again.

As said, the map data can be taken from the Volvo DVDs, do not overwrite the original LOADING.KWI nor can you ever misplace two additional files in the original map folders; MUINFIEE.BIN and UPDATE.DAT. Loose these or overwrite them and you are toast. Back to using that backup you made earlier.

Cheers

Thanks for taking the time to explain all that, I know my way round a screwdriver and a hammer but I better not have a nibble or a bite at any of this....

Great to know there is a way though... who is going to be the first to try on here...?? Pete
