I made this tool to get the drive shaft out. It still took a lot of work to get them out!

Trying to replace these arms and bottom ball joints as bushings in arms knackered. Got the arm off but stripped one of the Torx bolts on the ball joint. Tried to smash an 11/16 socket over the bolt but no joy. Going to collect a bolt extractor to see if that'll budge it. Could refit arm and leave ball joint but seems silly not to replace. Its not damaged but moves very easily when compared to new and if ball joint need doing soon I'll have to repeat half the job again. These cars are such fun!! |

If you have access to a welder, place a larger nut over the ruined bolt and weld it on. The heat combined with something to hold nearly always helps in these situations. Rob 05 L322 4.2SC

Not a bad idea, I've got an Arc welder in the depths of the garage. Think I'll dig it out if the extractor doesn't work.

I try to avoid extractors. They almost never work, and if they fail, the hardened material is impossible to drill.

Right I'll probably try to weld a nut on first then. Thanks.

It's true. I normally replace as much as I can before I have tracking done. A good "Hunter" alignment can cost quite a bit of money and only doing the job once is vital when you have family, work and lots of cars/motorbikes competing for attention. Rob. 05 L322 4.2SC

Well getting to the welder was not possible as it's in garage in front of MGB which I cannot move due to RR up on stands behind it! Persevered with trying to knock socket over bolt which I finally manged to make the bolt loosen enough to then wind out with screwdriver. Cup of tea time before I go back out and bray the living crap out of the ball joint to remove it! |

After an hour of bashing had to give in. Firstly I think the neighbours has heard enough banging (and expletives) and secondly my back was asking for a break! I'll continue tomorrow when I get chance. Back of ball joint now bashed in, also tried a punch which has made a hole in the back but no sign of either getting the back off or the ball joint moving in the slightest. Keep popping out to add more penetrating oil. |

Have you tried doing it the other way round? Removing the car from the ball joint rather than removing the joint from the car? It'll take a fair old team of us rotating the car while you hold the joint still though, so you'd have to wait a while until after Covid....... |
