you need one of these.

the tool is fitted over the wheel studs and the old wheel nuts are screwed onto the wheel studs which protrude the tool's flange. the other part of the tool is screwed down the centre of the tool's flange and when it's tightend in it pushes the cente of the cv inwards and the splinesare forced apart without damage .

If you think getting the drive shaft out is hard just wait till you try getting it back in hub, been there done that ! I believe some one on here drilled and tapped the end of the shaft to be able to screw a bolt or threaded bar in it to help pull it back in.

Drive Shaft Removal

I made this tool to get the drive shaft out. It still took a lot of work to get them out!

I also have a 20T press in my work shop, so getting the ball joints out is a doddle, although they do come out with a bang! I rebuilt this one the other day and its going spare now!

Trying to replace these arms and bottom ball joints as bushings in arms knackered. Got the arm off but stripped one of the Torx bolts on the ball joint. Tried to smash an 11/16 socket over the bolt but no joy. Going to collect a bolt extractor to see if that'll budge it. Could refit arm and leave ball joint but seems silly not to replace. Its not damaged but moves very easily when compared to new and if ball joint need doing soon I'll have to repeat half the job again. These cars are such fun!!

If you have access to a welder, place a larger nut over the ruined bolt and weld it on. The heat combined with something to hold nearly always helps in these situations. Rob 05 L322 4.2SC

Not a bad idea, I've got an Arc welder in the depths of the garage. Think I'll dig it out if the extractor doesn't work.
Got a couple of hours free later this afternoon.
Thanks
Paul.

I try to avoid extractors. They almost never work, and if they fail, the hardened material is impossible to drill.
I've used the "weld a nut" technique many times, including on painted parts and brake caliper bleed nipples. You can put a washer on first to protect the parent material if its painted or soft. Rob 05 L322 4.2SC

Right I'll probably try to weld a nut on first then. Thanks.
Good job I'm working from home currently so no rush on this job. I want to get both sides completed then I'll get tracking checked. Was a bit miffed when the front arms went the other year. The garage did the job and did only one side then the other side went only months later so I ended up paying for tracking twice!

It's true. I normally replace as much as I can before I have tracking done. A good "Hunter" alignment can cost quite a bit of money and only doing the job once is vital when you have family, work and lots of cars/motorbikes competing for attention. Rob. 05 L322 4.2SC

Well getting to the welder was not possible as it's in garage in front of MGB which I cannot move due to RR up on stands behind it! Persevered with trying to knock socket over bolt which I finally manged to make the bolt loosen enough to then wind out with screwdriver. Cup of tea time before I go back out and bray the living crap out of the ball joint to remove it!

Think of it as a cathartic smashing.....

Use many swear words up and don’t spare the hammer.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

After an hour of bashing had to give in. Firstly I think the neighbours has heard enough banging (and expletives) and secondly my back was asking for a break! I'll continue tomorrow when I get chance. Back of ball joint now bashed in, also tried a punch which has made a hole in the back but no sign of either getting the back off or the ball joint moving in the slightest. Keep popping out to add more penetrating oil.

Have you tried doing it the other way round? Removing the car from the ball joint rather than removing the joint from the car? It'll take a fair old team of us rotating the car while you hold the joint still though, so you'd have to wait a while until after Covid....... Embarassed

Hallelujah !! Very Happy
Couldn't get hacksaw in so levered on accessible lug and drilled hole into casing on other side to give me somewhere to get grip on punch.
Let's hope the rebuild and nearside are easier now I have an idea what I'm doing!!
Thanks all for advice.
