My rattling engine idle had been on for some time and finally due to increased oil consumption and blue smoke opened the head.

So.

Let's rebuild the motor, hopefully. I got used block coming with good bores.

So I have Victor Reinz gasket set 02-33396-01 for the heads. Then I found from Victor Reinz page they also make gasket set for the crank case, 08-31828-03. So obviously I need that. But it's really hard to find details on these sets, what specifically they contain? Are these two sets adequate to seal the whole engine?

What else is advisable to change at the same time? Chains, guides, water pump? Anything else?

great car T!! lovely colour! Not sure what your mileage is but I had the Chain guides done at 189,000 miles (310,000KM). Its a big job (£3,000 in UK) so worth doing. The guides get brittle over time and crack when the chain slaps it, especially on start up).

I would also maybe replace the radiator as the lower veins get filled with crud and lead to gearbox oil overheat. Also worth fitting a good quality water pump as I had 2 go on me. Ended up with a Hella.

Do as much as you can (afford) now and you will have a great car that will be a classic soon!!

My bores are scored but not as bad as that - I have just one line in four of my cylinders

Actually last night we fired up the rebuild and did short test drive. Everything seems to be gone perfect at the moment but still needs to see things are okay. I will return to this soon.

I’m now at a loss as to how I time the engine? Does anyone know please?

I can find out how to do it if you keep the lock blocks in place but not if you have had to remove them?

You need the M62tu timing tool set.
If you google M62tub44 timing tool set or M62tu timing tool set you'll find it.

I have some VANOS error codes from the bank 2. I'm little bit puzzled if solenoid wires are mixed or timing is bad. At least the engine doesn't sound bad.

What I don’t have is the procedure to use the Cam locks to re- time the engine.

RAVE only has the procedure to lock the cams in place when you remove the heads and leave the cam locks on the whole time so the cams are oriented correctly when refitting the heads.

I’m not sure RAVE covers that engine?

Basically, you set number 1 to TDC using the locking pin, install the heads and the turn the cams and fit the locking bars. Once the chain and gears are installed, you use the tool to set the position of the timing gears on the cams. I’ll see if I can get the procedure on a PDF for you. 2010 3.6 TDV8

This is originally of course BMW set, so there are some unused gaskets too. For some reason oil pump gasket was missing on my set.

What is missing on the sets:
Head gaskets.
Oil filter stand gaskets. Engine side is covered. 25x3. BMW recommends 23x3 bit the ID is 25.4 or so. I don't understand the stretch so I used the more fit.
Alternator gasket, big one (BMW 12 31 7 507 996).
Spacer Sleeve, (BMW 11 11 1 739 185). This comes above non-return valve between block and heads.

All the front diff o-rings at least should be changed. The big one is close to 90x3. I replaced also all radial seals of the front diff.
I'll update this list as I remember what else was missing.

You will find the procedure in RAVE; Engine V8; overhaul; Gasket -cylinder head.

Further information on camshaft orientation in the next section - Cylinder head overhaul which leads you to Variable Camshaft Unit - variable camshaft control (VCC).
