L405 2014 Vogue Knocking Noise

I’m having a great Saturday so far, firstly I’ve had to go for a COVID test due to experiencing some symptoms and on the return home the dreaded breakdown. I’ve had the car taken back home, due to the current situation the breakdown team can’t check the car at roadside with me returning from a test, I also can’t have it taken to a garage so it’s not back on the drive.

The car starts and drives and possibly could have been driven home, however I didn’t think it was worth risking it. I’ve attached a video of the engine bay, if anyone has any idea what this may be I’d really appreciate your advice.

I’ll need to wait for my test results before I can do anything with the car anyway.

Very difficult to say from that.

But it’s not meat to make that noise.

Does it rev freely, or is it stuttering shuddering. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Sounds bad.

I’m hoping for you that it’s not a bottom end failure.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Ouch, that doesn't sound healthy.

Having been on the sharp end of a 3.0 TDV6 in my RRS which resulted in a full rebuild, I have my fingers crossed for you.

My recommendation is to not start it at all and leave it be until it can be looked at. Kev

Would this be something covered by warranty?

Depends on the warranty?

If it’s a LR warranty. And it’s got a full service history, you stand a fairly decent chance if that’s what it is. Ryan has posted emails on here from LR stating that.

If you have a warranty I would get it to a LR dealer for investigation. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

That’s not good and is a real shame on what seems to be a nice car.

Having read your purchase thread regarding the problems you had with Stratstone (was it advertised as Approved Used or was it not) it would - once you get sorted - be helpful for other forum members to know what has gone wrong with your car, why, what it’s service and maintenance history has been like and how it gets resolved (ie warranty or not and if under warranty, what type warranty you have). I cover these points because of these two potentially relevant threads:
https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic45832...crankshaft

https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic54027.html

We had a two year 2 month 'mare with an Approved Used Supercharged Range Rover purchased from Stratstone. In the end, despite the car having spent about half that time in their workshops; and despite us having covered 20,000 miles in the car, we got a full refund on the original purchase price of the car.

Hopefully, all will be sorted at the least inconvenience and stress for you Thumbs Up

I certainly will keep you all updated.

The car was bought with 29000 on the clock from Stratstone advertised as approved used on their website through the use of AU display plates. They didn’t tell me this until after returning home with the car that it wasn’t AU, it which point I probably should have returned it.

The car has a full LR service history and was recently serviced in July at LR stratstone.

My only issue now is getting the car to LR for an inspection, I am hoping AA will help with this but I very much doubt they will as I believe it is 1 recovery per breakdown.

You sound like you’re in a relative position of strength as a starting point. Low mileage car bought in good faith as AU from franchised MD and since serviced and maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations by the same franchise group.

What warranty is your car covered by?

Depends on what warranty they gave you with the car.

If you managed to get the LR warranty out of them then LR assist should be able to help with that.

If not then I’m pretty sure that the CCP warranty does have an assistance bit.

Failing that. The dealer may be worth a rant at and see if they can arrange it. After all they sold it to you!

Bear in mind also that the LR approved warranty is sold by and administers by CCP...... so if you do manage to get them to pay out then it will be CCP’s money! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

That sounds like its done a big end...

Brace yourself for a fight, any warranty company will try to wriggle out of paying. If it is CCP/LRA warranty, they will reject the claim initially, as its a "design fault" with the engine

You'll then need the dealership to approach JLR for a goodwill gesture

If you've not had the car long, you may need to exercise some of your statutory rights Thumbs Up

is the fluid running out toward the end of the second video related? if so, it might not be a bottom end issue?

Update

Just a quick update.

AA have been great to deal with, they arrived this morning 15 minutes after my phone call to explain the COVID Test came back negative. The technician listened to the car running and doesn’t believe it is the Crank Shaft, he believes it sounds too smooth to be that and suggested it sounds more likely to be an injector, I’m no mechanic so couldn’t say either way, nothing came up when he plugged in the diagnostics tool, but he did say he’s need a specific reader to get all fault codes from the car.

They have booked the car to be recovered tomorrow morning and taken to my local LR stratstone service centre, which again is great from them as I don’t believe they were obligated to do so.

I’ll post on here once I have any information from LR.
