EPB

Strange one here......while waiting to enter Brighton Caravan Site we had to queue on a slope leading to the campsite.
Laden caravan on the back, slipped the girl into Neutral, foot on brake pedal, apply EPB, release foot pedal..........car creeps forward! Tried this several times and each time she wouldn't hold, slightly unnerving keeping one's foot on the brake pedal all the time.
I can only assume the weight of the caravan bearing down on the towbar plus the fact we were 'pointing downhill' fooled the EPB into not fully engaging? Or is it a sign of weak shoes etc.
She's in for her annual service/MOT in a fortnight so not overly bothered but just thought someone may have an idea? 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Put it in Park instead of Neutral, wont go anywhere then. BMW i3 Electric Car

Thanks AJ, always worried about any strain on the 'P' side of the gearbox after you put her in 'P' then release the foot brake, there's a lot of weight bearing down on that 'box & the same again when you de-'P' it?
I still don't understand why she wouldn't bite when the EPB was activated, I've had a good look on 'search' on here, but nowt lad Razz 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

A lot of places "forget" to adjust the EPB on the annual service. I specifically ask my local place (and mate mechanic) to do it so I know it's been done. Easy to do if you wanted to DIY....

Adjust the EPB shoes, same as you would with any drum brake system.

Follow the correct EPB drive cycle to set the shoes.

So, can I assume that the creeping forwards shouldn't have happened, even downhill slightly with near 2ton of tin behind? 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

The brake shoes may need adjusting. There is very little force on the gearbox compared to when your dragging your tintent around, you have nothing to fear in using Park. BMW i3 Electric Car

It should hold the car on its own.
Don't know if any handbrake could be trusted with 3 tons of RR + 2 tons of caravan + a hill. Paul,

Mine held with 2 Tonnes behind it on a steep hill no problem BUT they do need correct adjustment, good shoes and good drums. BMW i3 Electric Car

Mine holds the FF snd the the 3.5 tonne boat trailer on the back on a slip way (steep hill) just needs to be adjusted once a year.

I had a similar issue with our's and despite adjusting the brake shoes correctly, the EPB still wouldn't hold well.

I recently changed the handbrake shoes at the same time as rear discs (which gives you new handbrake drums of course), adjusted them up, went through the bedding in process and have a cracking handbrake now.

The old shoes had plenty of lining left on them, but at (probably) 8 years old were passed their best and did look a bit glazed to me.

Thanks for all your input, I've asked the Indy to add EPB to the service list.
Just looking at those last pics, the handbrake system/size isn't massive Laughing 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

If you are on a downward slope the caravan would be "catching" the tow vehicle so would it not make the caravan brakes operate so your handbrake is only actually holding the vehicle 2010 3.6TDV8 Stornoway Grey/ Black interior - gone
2005 4.4V8 (M62) Bonatti Grey/ Parchment interior - gone
1998 4.6HSE Blue/ Cream interior (can't remember exact colours) - gone
1977 White - gone (should have kept)

Very true but when your backing a boat down a slip way its the opposite and all the weight is on the car brakes.
