When I had the fan and cowl off I decided it would be time to make access to the front of the engine easier.
To this end I modified the cowl by cutting it in half so that I could fit the bottom half, then the fan then the top half.
Worked out extremely well, been back on the car for a good while with no problems.
Hopefully the pictures are self explanatory.
The only mod I did on refitting was to use cable ties on the clamps that hold the top inner circular edges of the cowl together, I found this easier than using nuts and bolts.

Note: TD6 only - cool running engine!

And once you have removed it, consider not putting it back on. You don't need it, engine/cooling will be fine without it. Many owners have done this, I ran for four years without it. Great for access to the bits at the front of the engine.

I’ve run mine for 2 years now without any problems also had a problem with the temp gauge not reaching 12 o’clock position, thought was egr thermostat. Replaced it twice thinking one was dodgy, turned out the main thermostat was failing.
Changed it out all running good, made easier having the fan removed. 2004 Autobiography TD6 Java Black

WOW so with the heat showing no signs of easing i cracked on with the Fan removal and alternator replacement!

Followed Rave and really helpful tips and tricks from you guys and after another few hows a dead alternator was born!

I had to make a flat spanner to hold the water pump still but that worked a treat and the fan spun off with ease.

Then had to remove/tie up the power steering pump.

And finally could swap out the alternator.

I decided to put the fan back as it seemed actually fine once i had the second spanner so thought i would return it to stock.

May well take it out later.

Thanks for all your help battery charging nicely and i did the oil breather up grade whilst i was in the mood.

Sweaty oily mess at the end but mission accomplished.

Just as an aside to this, my viscous fan has been 'sticking' recently and its sounded like a jet taking off every time I pull away and with the windows down quite loud. We've been away towing the caravan so not gone above 60mph for a few weeks now. I was facing replacing the viscous unit but did a run out last week of 20+ miles on duel carriageway. This seems to have freed up the viscous unit and doesn't engage from startup or running around.
I presume the high rpm and drag of the van allowed it to free up but just an option for anyone with the same. 2004 Vogue SE TD6
