Hi folks,

Was driving home today and found a rattling/metal rubbing noise from the front, I'm suspecting its the brake dust shield.

Couldn't investigate further due to the weather today to see if the washer trick would work or not. I will take off the disc and calliper tomorrow but in case its beyond repair or too rusty, does anyone know how to replace the shield with a new one without taking off the hub?

I assume I could cut off some metal but wanted to check if it has been tried before? and what are the challenges..

It's usually corroded around the mounting bolts and flapping about. The proper way is to buy a new ( check availability, some are no longer available new ) part, pull all the hub off, mount new shield. The other way is to get some big penny washers with an M6 hole and take up the missing corrosion hole until 5 years down the line when the corrosion is even worse, or the new owner has it....

Thanks BMG, I would like to do it the right away (like you said by pulling out the hub) but I have not done this before so not overly confident about it which is why I was wondering if there were other ways round Current:

Lot of working pulling the hub. Not the correct way of course, but some cut new shields, as per the link below, to avoid this.

Put the steering on full lock with the suspension up, and should take seconds to see if it is the shield flapping about.
I need a new shield for mine, but one of the two fronts is no longer available, so check first. A bigger washer will hold it needed.

Cut mine off when they did this

1977 White - gone (should have kept)

Cut the narrow bit out of the new one and Fettle it round. I managed to get one off and on again when doing some bushes by cutting a bit out of it and screwing it back into place.

Interestingly on the 405 they don’t wrap round the hub so can be changed a lot more easily. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Decided to not go down the washer route as it would fail again in a few months and I would have to take the caliper and disc off so may as well do it properly while the weather is good.

Ordered a replacement shield and waiting on delivery. Happy Days Current:

It can be a fu er.

Let Me put it another way. I took mine to my local garage to do some bushes on the front. They decided at some point that it would be easier to take the knuckle off to get the bush out.

They couldn’t get the drive shaft out of the hub to get the knuckle off...

At some point when they put it all back together someone forgot to put the hub nut on. So there was effectively nothing holding the wheel on........ except friction of the bearing onto the drive shaft. No one noticed. I drove the car like this for about 6 months until I needed to get the wheel off and some one noticed.....

So let’s just say it won’t just come off....... some persuasion may be needed. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Totally, this is the main reason why I didnt go down the hub route when the lower ball joint was seized in situ 2 years ago.

I will be cutting the bit off the shield and replace the new one. Current:

Did you have a look and establish the shield is flapping about first ?

Yeah, it's just sitting on the hub.. it looked a bit flakey when I replaced the upper and lower arms few months ago. I put it off because the local dealers didn't have them in stock. Current:

Managed to fit the dust shield today.. it was fairly easy..

Mind boggles why they didn’t just make it that shape to start with.

That’s exactly what I did to my replacement on the 2012. Makes a reall Ball bender of a job so much simpler.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
