I've always liked the idea of those, but dont they damage the sill? I dont think I could use them becaue I have side steps. I saw a RR Sport try to use one and it broke the trim off the bottom of the doors.

The Disco looks OK tho, does it have rock sliders or anything, or is it safe as is?

With a little mod to the pad on a standard trolley jack you can add a few inches to it. Just extend the pad so the starting height at rest is closer to the jacking point. You could even cut the top off the comedy LR jack and attach it to the top of the trolley jack to allow you to use the jacking points.

I like the exhaust jack bags. They can be used for all sorts of things beyond changing tyres, but are far to big when stowed. Can help you get out of a variety of off road situations (caused by bad judgement) without damaging the car.

I've used the comedy jack to change wheels in both Normal and Access height. Access height was easier (especially getting the spare out). Not sure what you're supposed to do on grass or on a slight slope with that jack. I agree with the sentiment that LR should be ashamed to put that jack in the car. An on-road (just) jack for an off road car!

Sure I had the same jack on a Ford Cortina Very Happy

In the RR Classics they always used to supply a good sturdy bottle jack with an adjustable crown that had a Y piece on the top for sitting under the axles - it was so simple in those days!

I might see if my dad still has one hanging about in his garage. he has a 5 tonne toe jack but slightly lacking in ground clearance too! (It was designed for lifting industrial heavy machinery off the floor to forklift/crane them out) Discovery 4 HSE

Dan The Exhaust jack spreads the load over a wider spectrum in the car and the ground. They are really the only option off road & in the sand. Always chock the wheels on the other side caus they can roll.

Great for getting a sand beached car out (way quicker than digging)

Theres a guy on Disco 3 that fabricated a great jacking point adapter for the DIY wheel changer

The factory Jack will only be used in very rare occasions

The answer re off Road Height & Access Height

Get your Spare & tools out first then put the car in Off Road Height then chock wheels

If you dont put it in OR Height the Jack will be under load all the way up and all the way down.

Taken from my manual

Using wheel chocks
The wheel chocks are stowed in the tool kit.
1. If possible, position the vehicle on level
ground, chocking both sides of the wheel
diagonally opposite the one to be removed.
Note: If jacking the vehicle on a slight slope is
unavoidable, place the chocks on the downhill
side of the two opposite wheels.
Raising the vehicle (Air suspension)
Note: Before positioning the jack under the
vehicle, ensure that the air suspension is set to
off-road height.

Note: Your vehicle is fitted with a tilt sensor
which activates the alarm if the vehicle is tilted
in any direction after it has been locked. If you
wish to have the doors locked while jacking up
the vehicle, lock the doors by pressing the lock
button on the remote control twice within three
seconds.
WARNING
Before raising the vehicle, chock the
road wheels in two places.

WARNINGS
Ensure that the air suspension is set
to off-road height.

Always remove the spare wheel before
jacking up the vehicle.
The jack is designed for wheel
changing only. Never work beneath
the vehicle with the jack as the only
means of support. Always use the vehicle
support stands before putting any portion of
your body beneath the vehicle.
Always place the jack on firm, level
ground.
Always position the jack from the side
of the vehicle, in line with the
appropriate jacking point.
Always use the complete, two-piece,
jack lever throughout to minimise any
chance of accidental damage or
injury.
CAUTION
Only jack the vehicle using the jacking
points described, or damage to the
vehicle could occur.

Workshop manual says to lift everywhere but the "customer jacking points" unless on a propper four point lift.

Hi Dan what MY is your manual for I use LR GTR I agree with what you say but most users on here are customers as oppose to tech's for the front jacking point it requires the removal of an undertray on mine, so devils avdvocate how do remove the tray ( go underneath an unsupported vehicle I guess well no fffeeing way)

On another note I'm looking for a bottle jack I'll post my findings when I find a suitable one

Ken,

That info is taken from the RAVE WSM so its pre 2006? Mine has an undertray, but a smaller one. It is possible to position the jack on the dedicated point without removing anything.

I don't really class myself as LR's average customer, their average customer wouldnt even know how to check the oil, although saying that sometimes I would ask the same question of their own service staff, who seem to have never been let near a manual.

"Do not position jack or stands under the following components:

1.Body structure OTHER than the customer jacking points"

The TD6 engine tray is much larger on mine too, any access to the subframe requires removal, which is 6 bolts.



In all seriousness though, what ARE the risks to crawling under the car to remove this if it is fully supported on all 4 wheels? All 4 tyres will not suddenly burst, dropping the car on your head?! Discovery 4 HSE

Yes, agreed it says the cust' jacking points as well, I was being overly dramatic in their initial exclusion.

But, by body structure other than jacking points what it means is "not in the middle of the sill...." not you should only use these to lift the vehicle.

The only time it says to use the customer jacking points is whilst on a lift or whilst using the factory jack. When using axle stands or other jacks use the designated points.

If you leave a passenger door open, it will not lower. You could also disconnect the battery (as the wsm says to on prety much everything Confused )

I wouldnt do major work under the car unless it was supported, although I have done things like change the oil in off road mode with a door open, and something in the way so it cant blow closed!
