Looking forwards a couple of weeks or so, I want to do oil and fluid changes on the diffs and transfer box.

Diff oil is no problem but I am struggling to find the transfer box fluid Shell TF 0753, all I can find is one by Smith and Allen on eBay at £17 a litre.

I have never heard of Smith and Allen has anyone else? or are there other known alternatives that you recommend?

Normally I would insist on Shell as its the only one LR specify so at the moment I will have to wait for the main dealer to reopen.

I have used Smith and Allen ATF in a previous vehicle and had no problems.

Also I think Duckworths can supply the genuine fluid and are still shipping. 2008/58 FFRR 3.6 TDV8 Vogue

Done some research on Smith and Allen, they sound like a very good company and seem to be trusted on other forums as well so that's an option.

Why I didn't think of asking Duckworth's I have no idea! I have an outstanding query with Rob so will add this on.

The Shell fluid was developed to give the right static-to-dynamic friction characteristics for the torque-biasing and differential-locking clutch in the DD295. The range change synchronisers are also calibrated around this fluid’s friction qualities. Unless you’re absolutely sure that a replacement fluid has identical friction modifiers in it, you should stick with TF 0753 or you could seriously mess up the calibration. In my opinion your transfer box is better off with old correct fluid in it than new incorrect fluid. Although the correct fluid is ridiculously expensive, you only need 1.5 litres of it.

Thanks your knowledge is legendary on this forum, however I thought only on auto gearboxes, but of course this is a gearbox we are talking about, so I appreciate your input.

OK, that's set me straight I will buy either the Shell or LR fluid (I assume they are the same), I do not want to compromise on such an expensive component.

Just to be sure that there’s no confusion here.

If you have a 5-speed transmission (ZF 5HP24 or GM 5L40-E) you have the New Venture Gear NV225 transfer box.

If you have a 6- or 8-speed transmission (ZF 6HP26/28 or ZF 8HP70) you have the Magna Steyr DD295 transfer box.

The two transfer boxes require different fluids.

For the earlier unit (NV225) the fluid friction characteristics have to satisfy the requirements of the Torsen Type-B centre differential and the range-change synchroniser cones – hence you should only use Castrol BOT 26 FMB 1 75W-90 (1 litre capacity).

For the later transfer box (DD295) the friction modifiers in the fluid have to match the requirements of the multi-plate clutch, which performs the front-to-rear torque biasing & centre diff. lock, and the range-change synchroniser cones – hence you should only use Shell TF 0753 (1.5 litre capacity).

Sorry. For some reason I thought you had a TD6 with the 5 speed GM box and transfer box.

Hi Phil, I've been looking for ages for Shell TF 0753 and still confused because searches for that grade come back with TF 0870 by the likes of rimmer bros etc.

I've just ordered transfer box oil and axle oils off Rimmer bros after a chat on the phone. Genuine land rover tf0753 and castrol SAF-XO. Expensive but a bit paranoid about what others have been using and somewhat conflicting advice.

I should have posted that I ordered some from Duckworths for a good price.
Just got to get it done now.
