Flappy paddle automatics

Small poll for those that have paddle shift on their new cars. I've never owned a car with them, my father's Honda Jaz Auto has them and after a year of ownership of the car used them for the first time yesterday and wasn't impressed! 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

Tim,

I don't think you have enough options as this is now my second vehicle with flappy paddles and I use them from time to time but not all the time.

The novelty has not worn off and I like them as there are times when you like to get in a gear to be prepared such as overtaking etc so your "use occasionally" is not really a good description as it suggests the novelty has worn off etc.

Not trying to be difficult but I could not answer your poll Thumbs Up "UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" ----is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" -----------is how far you take the fence with you.

Agree with Japseroony. Was going to say exactly the same thing.

In this type of car not needed or used often but still find useful in certain situations and epecially weather conditions (eg snow/ice). But I'm not bored of them and certainly don't think a novelty that's worn off.

Have had them in previous cars (sports cars) where were used a lot, sometimes out of necessity as this was only way in semi-automatic. But last motor had them as tiptronic auto, most of the time I'd leave it in auto, either D or S. Car was responsive enough in S for road use and not a situation I couldn't get out of really.

Adding new option would be a great help. Ta.

It isn't possible to edit the questions once the poll is posted unfortunately. Just about to order a new car for delivery toward the end of the year ( yes there is that sort of leading time for factory builds apparrently, especially certain variants) and the auto has them as standard and I just wondered what folks opinion of the was. I cannot even see the poll result as I cannot answer my own question without influencing the poll Confused What a sirry irriot...... 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

I love the paddles on the RR, there really great for using a bit of extra engine braking, I just wish they came with the old gear lever rather than the new Jag dial. 2021 P400 Silicon Silver AB

Well I loved them on my old Fezza and I like them in Wifey's XF although that's a slushbox, not a proper paddleshifted manual.

So the Aston we had a few weeks back was also a lot of fun, again a slushbox but at least the paddles were fixed on the column and don't go round with the wheel. Nice to know exactly where they are when there's arm twirling going on.

But in a FFRR ???? Well, a sports car it ain't. Pointless. Command Shift was much better for the odd occasion when a manual shift was needed.

They finally work on the 8 speed , it shifts down when you want it to and will jump more than 1 gear on shift down so great for engine breaking especially if towing , Up shift just puts it into higher rev sport mode which you do not need 90% of the time. But anyway yes i like them , have them on another car which is far more of a sports car and they work well , still miss manual on the odd occasion. Far to many gone...

Tboner, that is good to hear.

Johnson, i'm ordering a 2012MY car hence the long lead in............ Work commitments mean I have to order in the next few days otherwise I won't be able to do the paperwork in person. Once the order is confirmed I'll let you know if my spec is even possible. The dealer has to check if I can have Mahongony decking in the boot instead of boring yacht Teak...... And Edinburgh Crystal instead of Waterford for the drinks cabinet glasses Mr. Green 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

What are the changes for 2012MY - hope nothing too noticeable?!?!

Sounds like you're very organised! I can image the deck in the Autobiography Ultimate getting scratched very easily and stuff sliding round driving you crazy!!

On my M6 (before someone decided they deserved it more than I) - GREAT

On DSG type cars - Brilliant

On a Rangie - waste of time Smile

It's a proper replacement for manual these days imho - but the wafting of execs including the ffrr just does NOT call for it.

Tim - new shape? Have they set the final prices yet or is it still a bit of a lottery?

Got them on my 6 series and they are good fun to use on fast winding roads, helps to slow the engine and aid braking and ensure you are in the right gear to accelerate out fast.

On a RR?...yes. I wish I had them on my SC..why..because again they would aid braking into a corner, I have to stamp on my Brembos too often and feel the ABS kicking in sometimes. Twisted Evil Current MY2020
