Anyone know of a good country hotel in lower Scotland?

Looking for a nice hotel, preferably in a countryside setting, in lower Scotland as a stopoff on the way up to Scourie for a Lads fishing trip.

It needs to be around the Glasgow Edinburgh area, reachable within a day's driving (6-7 hrs) from Leics. It also needs to have a nice restaurant (Michelin star would be awesome)

Anyone know? Discovery 4 HSE

Only Michelin starred restaurant at a hotel I can think of is at Gleneagles Hotel, which is very nice, 90 minutes drive north of Glasgow and on your route north too. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

as said on another post - Ballathie House Hotel just north of Perth

or you could try Kinnaird House (Connie Ward) - used to be superb food but i'm going back a few years

Farleyer House - ditto but i'm out of date these days

where are you fishing at Scourie?

Michelin - Peat Inn used to be?

Further south is Cally Palace at gatehouse of Fleet which may be a bit off your route.
Not as grand Scottish Highland Hotels have the Old Royal High School in Stirling and about 1 mile off your route! The setting is rather special as it is on top of the same crag as Stirling Castle, it isn't a country house, it's a former school!

I cannot say how good it is now but The Lake Hotel at the Lake of Mentieth used to be a very nice place, but it chnaged hands 2 years ago and I haven't been there since. It is 14 miles west of Stirling, 100ft from Sotland's only Lake http://www.lake-hotel.com/ 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

just done some checking

Farleyer House is now only let by the week for the entire lodge/hotel

Kinnaird is now a restaurant only

so Ballathie as i first thought would be my recommendation - you will not be disappointed

when i was a regular visitor to Ballathie Diana Rigg was also a regular patron - lovely lady and a keen salmon fisher

Murrayshall House Hotel and Broomhall Castle are both nice. Murrayshall is just a few miles outside Perth (Scone way) and Broomhall is just outside Stirling.

Nick h,

This is VERY funny. Thumbs Up I know Ballathie VERY well, having stayed there every year with a large group when we went up for Grouse shooting. I love that hotel, It was on my list, and I'm pleased you also mentioned it. The one thing that puts me off is that it was reviewed about 5 months ago in the Shooting Gazette and they slated it for things like the dining room ceiling crumbling (plaster fallen off, unrepaired, unpainted etc). The last time I was there the breakfast gave my wife food posioning too and it totally ruined her stay, so much so she refuses to ever go back to Scotland Shocked A bit OTT but what can you do...

It's still at the top of my list though.

Another I used to stay in when I was a kid was Kinloch House Hotel nr Dunkeld. Anyone been there in the last 20 years?!! The guy who owned it back then wa sa total Tw"t. Hopefully he's gone/dead now. Discovery 4 HSE

Have a look at this one in Lockerbie.

We have stayed there twice, nice large rooms and great breakfasts.

Don't know about evening meals as we were at a dinner dance in another hotel.

Less than a mile off the M way.
