Squeaky belt

Had an annoying squeaky belt the other day, sprayed some brake cleaner on the belt, no difference. Tried WD40 & that cured it for a day but the squeak came back. Speaking to 4x4 Indy Saturday morning, he told me to lift the bonnet & await his 'special stuff"........it cured it instantly, quiet as a mouse. Same the day after, brilliant stuff it is, every workshop & toolbox should have some of this magical cure..........what is it?..............Johnsons Baby talcum powder (other makes are available).
Yep, a quick dousing of talc & the squeaky belt is no more. Apparently, the talc absorbs moisture rather than trying to disperse it with brake cleaner/WD40. Amazing what you can learn Very Happy [/b] 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

I take it you have to strip most of the covers off to get the talc where it needs to go? 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Mine got so annoying that I had a new tensioner fitted but didn't cure it 100%
Had Rovertune fit new belt and idler when it was on the ramps there.
Tensioner alone sometimes works for folks but not all Thumbs Up

mjdronfield: nope, just turned the engine off, tapped a little talc in the gap & hey presto, sorted. Took the guy all of 2 minutes. Dare say if you're clever enough you could make yourself some sort of 'blow pipe' & get it right on the belt. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Brill. Been putting up with mine squeaking for nearly a year. Driving me bonkers.

I can’t remember where the gaps are without looking.

I shall investigate.......

mjdronfield: If you pop the top plastic engine cover off, there's room between the radiator & the engine to squeeze a hand down there, or "aim-squeeze-fire" the talc from above as it where. When he started the engine up there was a slight puff of talc & that was it, quick wipe round with a rag & all's still quiet.
There is a product available from Motor Factors called 'anti belt squeak' but this has, so far, done the job for just a few pennies. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!
