4.4 TDV8 Engine Problem - Help!

Hi everyone,

Having a bad experience with my FFRR 4.4 TDV8 2011 unfortunately:

Car has 80,000 miles and intermittently makes a sucking noise at idle.

It also sometimes cuts out when driving and has a strong diesel smell (more so than normal I think)

A link to a video demonstrating the noise is below - any help much appreciated. Getting pretty desperate!

Thanks

PS Noise more obvious at end of video when i go under the bonnet.

Odd noise, hard to say.

Recommend getting a code reader.

The best one is Gap IIDTool

You could also get a garage to read the codes.

A few simple checks starting around your air filter, follow the hose and do a basic inspection for air leaks.
Just check the drivers side (the passenger side is only used over 2000rpm)

You really need to get an idea of where the noise is coming form , some mechanics use a stethoscope to find sources of noise, you could try that too.
. Cheers, Greg

Apparently no codes are being thrown - I have had a garage read them already...

Take it to a specialist independent LR expert and not an "ordinary" garage. The former will know these engines much better than a tin pot garage. Where are you located for a recommendation we can give?
Rovertune in Reading are excellent Bow down Rob there will also drop you off at the station and they have just opened / about to open an office upstairs for visitors Thumbs Up Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Does it do it with a full tank of fuel? It will not do a regen on less than a quarter of a tank, I wonder if it is on the border line of this starting to do a regen than stopping because parameters not right hence fuel smell. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

The sounds you are recording seem very much like the throttle butterfly is hunting, especially with the revs doing the same.

There could be several causes, one of which as Greg mentioned, is the possibility of a hose leaking on the primary turbo side. Go over them all carefully looking ofr evidence of loose fittings, soot or oily deposits at joints and the four hoses from the donut to the air inlets on the engine itself (splits in hoses). Plenty of threads on here about all this.

There is also a change over valve in the air system, buried at the bottom of the radiator which can seize, giving a similar effect, IIRC. Again threads on here about this.

Try starting the car and if the revs are hunting, open the bonnet, stop the engine, nip round the front and listen. If you hear a click/whirr/click/whirr, it may well be the throttle body drive gear failing. (been there, got the T shirt Rolling Eyes ).

Let us know how you get on. Thumbs Up Cheers
Richard

Thanks for the help everyone, not quite gone for good haha.

Surely the possibility of finding a leak from the turbos is liek looking for a needle in a haystack?

I guess the car will have to go into a professional...

Change over valve is plausible although the car doesn't smoke at all and still seems to have plenty of power - wouldn't be surprised if its had a remap as does seem particularly quick for a diesel.

One item to note that i did not mention is that the car makes a chirping noise when you switch it off - rather like air pressure being released - could this have anything to do with it?

The chirping noise on switch off is probably the EGR self cleaning. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The chirping could be a belt idler pulley or the tensioner if its only a chirp or 2 as the engine stops.

come to think of it its more like a releasing of pressure kind of whoosh noise

was just driving it now and whilst accelerating i got the same noise as when switching off and a big hesitation from the engine... the story goes on...
