0w-30 vs 5w-30 Oil - 4.4 TDV8

I like to carry around a spare litre of oil in the car, so just went on to Opie Oils, who have a black Friday sale, to stock up. However, when I put in my reg number they list out 5w-30 oils. But on the oil cap in the engine bay it clearly says 0w-30?

So which should I go for? 0w will be thinner at cold temps than 5w, will it make that much difference? I'm leaning towards following LR guidelines and going for 0w, but interested to hear other views.

Mine is a 2012 TDV8

The drivers handbook states 5-30 C1 spec. oil and I have always used Shell Helix Ultra 5-30 AF-L from Opie with no problems.

I've wondered what I should get for a top up - I've not needed to top it up yet, but I don't like the idea of being caught on the hop. Any specific recommendations for a 4.4 tdv8?

My previous BMW apparently needed a particular formulation (not that it did it much good as it still suffered tappet failure). Is the RR the same, or will any old decent oil of the correct spec do? 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Use the Shell Helix spec as above Thumbs Up
Opie oils sell it.
I have a small 1L in the boot of some I got from Advanced Factors a while back. Not Shell but in spec and there for non planned top ups. Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Oil type on ALL 4.4TDV8's & 3.0TDV6 is absolutely critical people... The oil needs to have all the correct letters & numbers after it! Its imperative Exclamation

Thanks Craig,

That's what I was worried about. So do the oils linked above have the correct letters and numbers?

Or can you suggest something?

She’ll helix AF -L as per the picture definitely does meet the spec, but you need to be VERY CAREFUL when buying, because they sell so many similar looking containers with different specifications, but ONLY AF -L will do.

Craig is spot on in saying it is critical.

It states the exact oil type in everyone’s service books... For clarity, I suggest you take a pic of that page and make 100% sure when purchasing, that the oil matches perfectly what it asked you in your book sir...👍

I ordered a large amount of oil in when ECP has a deal on... The manager at our local branch sent us FOUR!!! shipments assuring me “this one is right” apologising each time!!! Two of them were incorrect Shell Helix! Before they found the correct one at twice the price!

Here you go, photo from my Owners Handbook. I am wondering, what is the AF-L you refer to?

From Shell's website, spec for said oil for the 4.4

https://www.shell.com/motorist/oils-lubric...5w-30.html

See the WSS spec.

(Even they get the picture wrong, AR-L) Cheers

All the Advanced Factors oils specified for the 4.4 TDV8 with DPF meet WSS-M2C934-B.
All are coded ADV914 on their site for simplicity.
I have 1L of one in the car as a just in case.

Shell Helix meet same WSS-M2C924-B spec if you look on Opie Oils site.
