Battery voltages

Hi all, new member from sunny Scotland! I have had my current RR for 5 years, a 2011 TDV8, and had the dreaded starter click issue about 18 months ago when I replaced it. I also replaced the start/stop button for the hell of it. It didn't fully go away and still I get the dreaded click. I'm not convinced it was the starter and I'm thinking I have a battery/alternator issue instead. Can someone with a similar model car check the these voltages? Engine off, 11.8v(low I know), engine on 14.8v(bit on the high side), under load 13.4v(quite a drop). I think it may be the original Land Rover battery, 8 years old????

Thanks Stan, totally agree! My only concern is the 14.8v being on the high side or is this normal? I don't want to replace the battery so that the alternator can take it out????

i assume you have an AGM battery so 14.8volts is the max it will take whilst charging... ... - .- -.

Pretty easy job to change it if you can lift it out.
Be warned it is pretty heavy.
14.8v is OK, particularly on an old battery.
If you reset the BCU you will find it drops a bit for the new battery, but I didn’t reset mine and 18months later it is still showing 14.8v and has been fine.

Thanks guys, just been reading up on AGM(Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries! AGM is mentioned below the battery part number BH42-10655-BA. Couple of things, what is the BCU, where can I find it and how do you reset it? Is the charging voltage not regulated by the alternator, how would the alternator know you have an AGM battery? Is there anything you need to watch out for when changing the battery? I seem to remember my previous RR from 2003, you had to rotate the steering wheel from lock to lock to release the suspension or something like that?

I think you'll find the BCU is in the way of removing your battery. It is on the front of the battery box, secured by a couple of screws and a cable or two with connectors.

It is recommended that you tell the car it has a new battey as the BCU controls the rate of charge, apparently it learns the required levels as the new battery will charge a t alower voltage initially I understand. A BCU reset requires a diagnostic unit. Whether a dealer/specialist or the ever favorite GP IID is your choice. There may be others on here who can advise if this is essential, but reading Mike's post he hasn't and has not suffered any problems, but I'm lucky in having an IID and I don't think the lock to lock is required on the 11MY.

Engine off and after all the bits have shut down my voltage at the battery is about 12.5-12.7. Your 11.8 is low and I agree with Stan it may be time for a new battery. Cheers
Richard

Depending on which section of the workshop manual you read...
Battery Charging Unit or ...Battery Control Unit.
The full 2010/12 Workshop Manual is now available free of charge by clicking on the Wiki link in the forum header.

It is a real font of information.
