Will car shut itself down if fuel gauge reads empty?

Hi,
I am hoping one of you good people may be able to help. I have a 2010 3.6TDV8 with a very erratic fuel gauge (which never shows more than half full). Will it shut itself down if it reads Zero miles to empty (although there is plenty of fuel in it) ?
It suddenly dropped to zero today when stopped on a slope, and didn't cut out, but it was only for a few seconds untl I was on the level. I am hoping that it is just corroded fuel sender connections/wiring.
Thanks in advance.

It will keep going until it physically runs out.

One bank holiday when everywhere seemed to be shut, I drove a bum squeakingly long way with zero miles to empty being displayed.

This thread may have some clues as to the cause.

Can’t be sure about yours but my 2011 4.4 started going into limp home mode when my sender unit failed showing zero even when half full

Thanks Cass.
I'm not going to venture too far from home until it's fixed so limp mode wouldn't be the end of world. I just don't want it to die on me!

I wonder if you could stick a resistor across the faulty sensor plug as a temporary measure? 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Hi Mike,
Hadn't thought of that. As it's due into the garage in a couple of weeks I will just keep my fingers crossed till then.

Many thanks
Guy

The resistor trick does work. I got 2 variable resistors (one for each sender). They were less than £1 each at Maplins at the time then tweaked them to get a reading on the gauge just so that I could run the tank down before doing the repair. It worked that well that I ended up using the car like that until the weather improved.
