I don’t think the damper supports anything, just slows it down opening, so you will still need straps, plus there is only a single damper used, just on the right side, when it’s fitted at the factory.

I’m not aware there is an upgrade for the straps? Have I missed something?

Think they come standard on 2011 MY. The wee strut is on the right side lower tailgate.

Replace the straps, they will fail if rusting. See the various threads on here (Stan got dumped on the deck when his failed).

Cheers Richard, I was wondering if there was any greater benefit of adding the strut other than the booth not banging hard and coming down slowly. Not really keen on drilling holes, especially after some folk report the screws went loose after a short while. Current:

I have had both, but was always happy with earlier Td6 with no strut.

Retro fitted on two FFRR's - just enjoyed the damped drop of the tailgate. No issues with screws coming loose, I tapped the holes I made so the set screws (bolts) are held nicely in place. Otherwise make smaller holes and use self tapping screws .

Replaced both straps last month. Didn't bother with the damper. Don't really see the need for it. Just lower it by hand. One of the new ones had a nipple on it for the damper.

Mine were seized when I first bought it years ago, when removed the cable was fine and the crimp, it was just the bush that spins that had rusted and from memory theres some plastic mixed in somewhere.

DON'T buy the cheaper cables, the covering cracks and splits and cables rust for fun in 5 mins, even though I'd dunked em in grease! I'll be replacing em AGAIN soon before they snap but with original parts! 2008 L322 Vogue 3.6 TDV8 in Java Black with parchment and Navy interior. 125000mls.
