Well, unfortunately, a new battery hasn't solved the problem. It's still doing exactly the same thing.

My understanding of this problem is that there is a small donut shaped magnet within a solenoid in the steering column that breaks up stopping the solenoid working / key turning. There are two methods to cure. One involves drilling a hole and pumping in some lube in the hope it might get it working, the second and seemingly better option is to replace the magnet. There are plenty of how too`s, unfortunately, I don't have time to search and help at the moment but can give a link for cheap magnets which I believe to be a correct size or at least one that will fit. Maybe someone else has the fix bookmarked and can post.

Brilliant, thanks again. I hadn't thought of ebay. We usually get cheap parts from the mob in Adelaide, Triumph Rover Spares, who are really good both price and service but unfortunately, they don't have any at the moment.

Logically whichever way you go the column is coming out so I would stick with the $2 magnets and have 9 spares to play with or even help others in the future. I would add that the magnets are not guaranteed by me as the right size however I got the size from someone who had done the job and posted the info. I just made a note for future reference. There is a seller on eBay who will sell you one magnet for around $17 plus $20 shipping if I remember correctly and presumably that comes with a guarantee. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Awww thanks Clabs. That's really sweet. I do miss him terribly - he was so incredibly clever, there was nothing he couldn't do. There's no way I could have possibly sold his Rangie, despite advice otherwise due to the expense when she starts to go downhill (which apparently she is). My husband was a diesel mechanic by trade and had Land Rovers his entire life. So most things he fixed himself. He wouldn't even allow a "foreign" vehicle on the driveway. Hahahaha. So yeah, it's going to be challenging keeping her, but he would be mortified if I sold her.

As long as you can start the car and the steering lock is disengaged I see no reason why not to continue indefinitely.

If anyone in Perth Australia needs a replacement magnet for the steering lock solenoid I have a few spare FOC. 2007 TDV8 VSE
