Same happened to mine. Key wouldn’t turn, column wouldn’t unlock

Tried charging the battery, no difference. Column lock motor had failed

Ripped out the lock, removed the gear cable interlock, job done Laughing

Fun and games.

The steering lock isn't engaged on mine though, so am hoping it will be an easy fix with a new battery. Even if it isn't, she's due for a new battery anyway. Fingers crossed that's all it is.

Well, unfortunately, a new battery hasn't solved the problem. It's still doing exactly the same thing. Big Cry

I'm wondering about the IID tool now. The voltage reads 12.2v. I would have thought it would be higher with a new battery.

Back to the drawing board. At least she's now got a new battery.

My understanding of this problem is that there is a small donut shaped magnet within a solenoid in the steering column that breaks up stopping the solenoid working / key turning. There are two methods to cure. One involves drilling a hole and pumping in some lube in the hope it might get it working, the second and seemingly better option is to replace the magnet. There are plenty of how too`s, unfortunately, I don't have time to search and help at the moment but can give a link for cheap magnets which I believe to be a correct size or at least one that will fit. Maybe someone else has the fix bookmarked and can post.

Awesome thanks.

I spoke to a mechanic friend of my late husband's who said it was definitely a steering column issue. A new one is around the AU$6000 mark. Not happy Jan!

I'll do some reading from the link you provided. Thanks so much for taking the time to find it.

Good luck with it, keep us informed.
Here are the same magnets even cheaper, they will take a good while to arrive so just order them in case you need them

If you do decide on buying a column try ebay UK as there are plenty for sale. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Brilliant, thanks again. I hadn't thought of ebay. We usually get cheap parts from the mob in Adelaide, Triumph Rover Spares, who are really good both price and service but unfortunately, they don't have any at the moment.

Thanks for the link for the magnets too.

Logically whichever way you go the column is coming out so I would stick with the $2 magnets and have 9 spares to play with or even help others in the future. I would add that the magnets are not guaranteed by me as the right size however I got the size from someone who had done the job and posted the info. I just made a note for future reference. There is a seller on eBay who will sell you one magnet for around $17 plus $20 shipping if I remember correctly and presumably that comes with a guarantee. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Sorry to hear that a new battery didn't sort things, although it does sound like the old one was on the way out so I wouldn't look at it as money wasted.

The only thing I can think worth trying before you go down the other suggestions is a hard reset. I know someone mentioned it earlier in this thread but wasn't sure if your son did this? Basically, you disconnect both battery cables and then short (touch) them together. Connect back up, keep everything crossed and hope the key turns. It is a long shot I know, but these cars can do some really weird things when the battery is on the way out.

On a separate note, I was very sorry to hear of the passing of your husband but respect to you for keeping his baby running Smile

Good luck!

Awww thanks Clabs. That's really sweet. I do miss him terribly - he was so incredibly clever, there was nothing he couldn't do. There's no way I could have possibly sold his Rangie, despite advice otherwise due to the expense when she starts to go downhill (which apparently she is). My husband was a diesel mechanic by trade and had Land Rovers his entire life. So most things he fixed himself. He wouldn't even allow a "foreign" vehicle on the driveway. Hahahaha. So yeah, it's going to be challenging keeping her, but he would be mortified if I sold her.

No my son didn't do a hard reset. To be honest, I'm not used to these forums and found it difficult to find the right info. I'll try and find it again today and then I'll give it a shot.

As an aside, is it ok to continue to "run" it as it is? Or will some sort of additional damage ensue?

As long as you can start the car and the steering lock is disengaged I see no reason why not to continue indefinitely.

Are you aware of the Fuse 18 trick?
