Occasional Transmision fault?

Every now and again when I start up I get the warning Transmisin fault, limited gears.
If I drive I'm stuck in 3rd.
Switch off, re start and all is fine, drives perfect, recently did 550 mile round trip with no errors.
once or twice when re starting I get nothing not even a click from starter, even though lights are on.
The battery sounds really strong when starting, no slowness in cranking although as it fires straight away that maybe hard to tell.

Any thoughts?

New battery seems to have cured it.
