upper tailgate rubber marking lower tailgate

Hey guys,

i noticed that the upper tailgate stops which are plastic? No rubber on them? and the long rubber seal seem to be marking the lower tailgate, its almost ridged the clear coat..

Ive stuck some 3m paint protection film over it for now and hopefully that will prevent any actual clear coat rub through..

But is this common?

Also noticed some rust on upper tailgate as well which has annoyed me..

Anyone know roughly costage to sort this out?

 Regards

Daz

Morning Dazza

I've just had the offside corner of the tailgate repaired, where the panels curve in and seems to rot, it's a known fault. Back to bare, outside and as much as possible inside in the area, etched, primed and painted/coated for £80. The metal work was, fortunately, showing no signs of rust damage. This was done at a small, but very well recommended 'shop local to me. Rates here will likely be less than Soton though.

It is a known area for corrosion, as are the rear wheel arches (search for solutions, plenty on here) but the work on mine at the same time as above was £120. Get this done if there is ANY sign of corrosion.

I've got the same mark on the lower tailgate and can't find any out of true causing it. Keeping an eye and will attend to it soon. Cheers
Richard

Morning buddy,

cant belive these cars rust at all, so frustrating my cars not new at 2011 but at only 7-8 yrs old i just shocked lol..

I do belive a lot of the rust on cars can be prevented by keeping the car clean, so the previous owner of mine is to blame i think lol..

My arches were starting to rust lightly so i painted hammer right direct to rust on them, they look musch better...

Tailgate i guess ill have to save some pennys ad maybe get it done next year

With regards to the upper tailgate marking the lower i think just bad design?? Kind of happy to hear its not just my car would be good to hear if others have the same marking? I can see how / why the upper stops mark the paint as they are quite hard.. should have some kind of rubber over them but the rubber seal shouldnt mark the paint unless maybe its the vibration from general driving and maybe a combination of not keeping it regualry clean.. Regards

Hi Dazza,

The thinking on the wheelarches seems to be to fit a rubber/plastic protector strip, with grease to prevent water getting in. Take it off and check each spring and refit. Link to the thread, strip and how to:

Nicedayforit, third post down and link to strip below.

Just been looking a the lower gate on mine and it's not too badly marked and should polish out. You might have already done this but regarding the upper hard stops, your photo shows the upper tailgate with the metal part of the strut fitting which should contact the hard plastic pad on the body. Top of my photo, just visible by the seal, I think these adjust in and out like a bolt. Maybe check yours are correctly adjusted and not allowing the upper gate to contact the lower to"firmly".

Hope this help.

As to rust, yeah it should be possible to have a rust free car, but that would mean the lovely car makers would go out of business as their cars would last too long. Sad eh? Cheers

Would have thought that upper tailgate is correct when flush with rear opening on both sides and latching without undue pressure? Previously a 2008MY Tonga Green Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8

To tell if stops are wound too far in try pressing in
on the edges when closed. If you can press it in a bit wind the stop out a bit more that side? Previously a 2008MY Tonga Green Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8

Just trial and error I believe. Unless my stoppers are a good few turns out from the body work I get a really woolly close. Just give them a half turn on either side and close, check the gaps from the tailgate to the rear quarters, and assuming it's stopped smacking the lower tailgate you're done, if not, go again

I'm not sure if it's case by case, because mine still latches fine when the bolts are nearly out, but you can tell that it's not quite in line, and the noise on closing is a bit tinny. Bearing in mind your issue, I'd just keep going out in quarter turns until you're just out of line, then go back in a bit. You won't have problems latching, but should minimise the marking on the lower tailgate
