TD6 Starting/fuel pressure problems...maybe!

Hi All

We've got a 03 Td6, which has been pretty good for a couple of years. just before Christmas the ole girl started to take a while of cranking before starting. This got worse pretty quickly and now takes pretty much all of the available battery energy to start the thing. Once its running, it'll be fine all day and runs perfectly.

I read the codes on my hawkeye and can see DTC: 9F6 Fuel pressure monitoring whilst starting. suspecting that the inline fuel pump provided initial fuel pressure before starting was at fault, I removed the access hatch and had a friend turn the ignition on whilst I listened and felt it - I can definitely hear and feel it working.

Thinking that the in tank pump must be working too as it runs fine when it starts, so have ruled that out (might be wrong here).

I then pulled the engine covers and looked at the fuel lines to the injectors. With all 6 T pieces from the injectors removed and put in a big jar, I can see fuel peeing out of the hose when the ignition is switched on, so one thinks the car is getting the right amount of fuel.

I then observed the tops of the injectors and I can see fuel pooling in the tops on nearly all of them, with less fuel on injectors 3 and 5 (from the front). Interestingly if one of the 4 digit numbers on the injectors is the date stamp, 3 is 2014 and 5 is 2010. the others are '03, 09 and #08. i.e if the fuel leaking back is the cause, the worst culprits are the older ones.

I don't have leak test kit, but am willing to get one, but even if I do and discover the injectors need replacement, I think I will be o.k getting them out, but how the hec do you get the very rearmost one out, given the limited clearance with the bulkhead/bit under the windscreen.

Any ideas/am I barking up the right tree?

Plenty of room to remove the rear injector once the pollen filter box has been removed. On top of the fuel filter is a pressure sensor, if there is no pressure you will get an injection system fault message on the dash. The low-pressure side should be close to 4bar, you are able to get a reading with diagnostics. Both tank and external pumps can be had very cheap on Ali Express if you can wait. If you are doing the in-tank pump be sure to have some new hose and jubilee clips as the original must be cut off and cant be reused.

Thanks Wayneg for the reply.


There are no dash messages regarding low pressure - just the fault code registered on hawkeye.

I used Hawkeye just now to have a look at the pressure and I am getting 3.9/4 bar pressure prior to starting, so that in my mind seems good. Once its running, it runs lovely, totally smooth and well, normal.

This still makes me think the injectors are at fault, but I still cant correlate the fault code I mentioned with the injectors leaking...but perhaps it does.

With a fully charged battery this morning it took probably 7-10 seconds of cranking before starting. 2010 L322 Autobiography Black Edition

You say the injectors are leaking from the tops, that should not affect running, the plastic t pieces have o rings which must be failing, see this replacement, you can get in brass for a bit more.. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-6-CYLINDER-...rk:37:pf:0

Might be worth doing a leak off test and a live injector test to see if it points to one injector. Strange its running ok once started 2007 TDV8 VSE

I'm in the process of sorting a leak test (getting some tubing and bottles to rig something up).

Just to clarify though, once running it runs fine, so I'm still minded to think the pumps are doing whats expected of them.

Mine did similar when I had a TD6, turned out injectors were faulty. If 1 injector is faulty it will start, you won’t notice it, but if 2 go bad it struggles to start. Had 2 recon ones fitted and was fine after.

Garage did it, so I don’t know any codes or anything.

Just a thought and what I was told.

I have had 2 fuel related issues in my ownership. No 6 injector took ages to nail it as it was a very intermittent bad idle. Using BMW ipna live values, after many tries it finally pointed at the injector which proved correct.
2nd issue was the loss of power under full acceleration at speed, not 100% sure but everything pointed at the in-tank pump, I changed both electric pumps and for good measure, the injector loom as I was doing a long remote trip. All good since.
Have you tried Easy Start or similar when cold, easy enough to pull the air hose off the EGR to spray some in. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Do you have more than half a tank of fuel?
I had a problem with the in tank pump which was giving low pressure and would not pull fuel from the slave side of the tank.
Worked fine with a full tank but when getting below half would give all kinds of starting problems.

New pump fixed it, did not have to cut any hoses, just remove unit from tank, split the pump housing and replace pump.

Excellent write-up in Wiki (is for V8 but pump is same).

I just replaced the inner pump on the delivery side.

You can check both fuel gauges from diagnostic menu to check transfer between tanks.

Just updating this thread a bit.

Eventually got fed up of trying to find the right sized pipe for the injectors and ordered a 23 quid test kit from amazon.

Tried it today and it produced clear evidence of 3 of the 6 injectors leaking badly, with the other three starting to push fuel up the pipe. I only ran it for about 10ish seconds.

Next task is to find some reasonably priced injectors...this ones gonna cost!

They are supposed to let a little bit of fuel through so all will leak a bit even when good 2007 TDV8 VSE

I think I'll take the safer option and try and get them fixed.

There's a couple of places locally (Cornwall, where I'm at) that look like they'll sort them.
