Replacing the EGR thermostat on a TD6 - can that be done by just removing the top engine cover? Or does the radiator shroud need to come off as well, and that means removing the viscous fan? It all looks pretty cramped near the EGR - doesn't look like easy access like on the BMW EGR thermostat replacement video on Youtube.

You will need to remove the viscous fan and shroud to be able to get at it all and undo everything to remove / replace

Perhaps take the opportunity to leave the fan off, and the shroud, makes all manner of front of engine activities so much easier.

I changed the egr thermostat on my td6 not so long ago just by removing the top engine cover.
Bit fiddly but definitely doable.

How did you get to the bolt under the vacuum hose? Remove hose, and refit with a new hose clamp? Or some other way?

You'll have to give me time to refresh my memory as to how I did it, didn't think at the time I would have to explain it.
All I know is I didn't take the fan off and the old egr thermostat is in my box of bits in the garage.

What I did was to prise off the top clip on the vacuum hose and then pull the metal pipe out from the end of the rubber tube.
I was then able to leave the rubber tube in place but push it to the side to allow me to undo the bolt underneath it which holds the egr thermostat in place. Changing the egr thermostat was then straight forward albeit in a small space.
Once the egr thermostat had been changed I put a jubilee clip on the end of the rubber tube, refitted the metal pipe into the hose and tightened the clip. No problem at all since.
To be honest I didn't find it difficult to do. The awkward bit was releasing the metal pipe from the rubber hose, I sprayed wd40 at the end of the hose to help release the pipe.
It never actually crossed my mind to do it any other way, no way was I taking the fan and fan cowling off.
If I had to repeat it I would do the same again.

Just a point, on removing the egr thermostat you will loose some engine coolant. When the thermostat has been changed and the coolant topped up you will need to bleed the system using the black plastic screw on the top of the thermostat.

EGR thermostat replaced today. The metal pipe refused to come out of the rubber vacuum hose despite some silicon lube and boiling water to soften it, so cut the rubber hose off and replaced with a new length of hose and two jubilee clips after replacing thermostat. Engine now seems to be running warmer - old thermostat was 'leaking' as I could blow through it when removed.

How do the standard clips not he short rubber hose come off? Not come across that type before.
