Got a new rad, thermal valve and coolant tank going in at the end of the month, so will see if this sorts things out! Wink .

My over cooling issue has returned again. I had a blip a few months back where it ran cooler than the usual 88 degrees. Last night driving 80 miles on the motorway it was at 67 degrees! I can't beleive I am so unlucky that the thermostat has failed again within 9 months. Could a faulty pre-heater contribute to it not reaching the correct temperature perhaps? I wondered if the coolant sensor was misreading but when I have the heating at full temperature its not as hot as it should be.

Any thoughts appreciated. 2012 4.4TDV8 VSE

I swapped the thermostat today. The one removed (cheap one from euro car parts) had failed, the metal spring loaded disc that should seal the water way, was at an angle preventing a seal then snapped as I fiddled with it. I sourced a proper LR/BMW replacement from duckworths this time and after the ordeal of stripping it all down again, it is now heating to the correct temperature. That's the third time in 9months I have done that job! The lesson is don't use cheap parts on tricky jobs. 2012 4.4TDV8 VSE

Good job Triple 6 Thumbs Up

Since new rad, coolant tank, EGR thermal valve and removal of viscous fan (and a thermostat some time ago now) all is sweet here too .

Hi Joe,
I have blanked my EGR off, should I worry aboot the thermos thingy?

The main thermostst?
Where is it?
I have been directed to halfvway along the right hand side of the head where the top hose seems to enter.

symptoms?
guage in 12 oclock and slightly lefy all the time.
seems to take an age to heat up.
connected a blue tooth OBD scanner with this tablet and the temp went doon to 68 and up as high as 101.
I think = thermos failing. Open to othoer thots as it seems rather a big job.

Cheers again

bill

p.s. just realised after re reading your thumbnails, my new stat does not have a space for any electric heater tho. Made in Scotland frae 'Girders'

Weil did the stat today, 3 hrs (no viscous) and only held up once by one of the torx bolts that hold the stat in place.
Such a bad design that.
Anywas, replaced and refilled.
Air bled and ran it with my tablet on OBD to get a digital readout.
Up it crept
Elec fan came on at 88 and off at 83.
Perfect.
Went for a drive and perfect.

Checked the old one and the rubber surround had perished.

A good job and pleased with the result just hope my cheap aftermarket one lasts after reading above post.

Joe, thank you for your photos and detailed intructions.

Maybe my mpg wil improve as wont be on 'choke' sometimes when it suits.

Keep yer informed as got a long trek in the morning.

Mmmmmm 200 miles AND...........
Fixed up the tablet to the OBD.

Sorted, and away I went.

Almost imediatly I noticed that the read out was slow.

Hit the dual carragway and the temp stayed about 75 with the dash temp guage sitting at 10 o'clock.
Prior to the stat change the guage remained at 12 oclock even when OBD went up to 100.
So, sitting at 70 ( Smile ) the OBD went doon to 68 with a high of 75.
I stopped in layby and had a look under bonnet.
No pressure whatsoever on the top hose, took exp cap off with no problem. No hissing or spillage. Plenty of fluid.
Bunnet shut I carried on.
140 miles laters leave the M6 Toll amd the temp went up to 84.
Negotiating lights and round a bouts the guage crept up and back doon to 84.
Stopping at Tesco I allowed it to tick over and once temp reached 89 the elec fan came on.
All working normal noo.

It would be good if someone else could link up an OBD to compair with.

Also, any ideas as to why this is happening?

Forgot to add, when rad came oot it was rather caked up so that was cleaned.
Could the increase in cooling air flow cause this?

All comments greatly received

Sounds like the stat is stuck open. Might need a few cycles to free it otherwise it will need to be replaced. Temp guage should be rock solid at 12. .

Hey Bofa Bill

Plugged in ELM327 BT and fired up Torque Pro.

Started car from cold and let it idle to hot (while I washed it!)

At 10 o'clock (marker above the blue section) @ 52 degrees
At 11 o'clock (next marker up) @ 62 degrees
At 12 o'clock reached at 76 degrees then moved up to 89-91 degrees and steadied there, whilst remaining at 12 o'clock.

as I don't have viscous fan fitted, no electric fans came on (never have, even when sitting in traffic)

I have the standard thermostat and coolant tank lid, and understand car will run at up to 105 degrees .

Thanx for that Joe.
Pretty much similar to mine.
I am just shocked at the temp variation while driving.
Fluctuates between 78 and 88.

Happy bunny noo.
