Yeah mate. The 2 cables on the car, touch them together. Battery not involved.

Without removing the battery you won't get enough room to literally touch the battery leads together sir... So, if you use a jump lead and remove the battery terminals, cover that terminals with a piece of something non conductive! Then attach the jump lead to the removed terminals (now with no chance of touching the battery as its insulated) for 3-5 seconds and bobs your aunties cat!!! Battery hard reset performed... Remove the insulated cover and Re-attatch the battery terminals... Remember its attach the live terminal first, then the earth... Try to attach the earth in ONE fluid motion |

I think it was a BMW thing Mike, as soon as Ford took over, i guess the steering angle sensor was upgraded to keep its memory... |

If the fuel gauge is still reading empty then the sender unit wiring is causing your problem

If the fuel gauge is still reading empty would this cause the engine to run lumpy ?

The fuel sender is a known problem, there’s a TSB explaining the fix. Someone (I can’t remember who) did a good write up with pictures on here.
