After 10 weeks I am currently on breakdown #1 of what I am sure will be many. Came out of work yesterday and the key wouldn’t turn. Unlocks and locks fine on the button. Three clicks when turning putting the key in.

AA done a battery reset which sorted it, drove it home and turned it off. Turned it back on no problems.

Thought I’d charge it overnight as he mentioned the short journeys could be the problem. Took the charger off and tried the key, started no problem. Turned it off again and tried to turn it back on but the same problem has returned.

I’ve read a bit on here and other forums, sounds complicated but a common theme is that the steering column must talk to the barrel in order to release the steering lock and the barrel.

Got it in a garage now who are looking at it, an independent 4x4 who specialise in Land Rover. We’ll see what they say.

If anyone knows of a miracle cure I would be extremely grateful.

if you drill the casting get plenty of wd40 into that hole to wash out any crap and then plenty of silicone to lube the solenoid

When my 2004 car's battery was very flat the key refused to turn. Maybe the effort of powering yours up and starting it was enough to get it back down to the level where this happens. Maybe get the battery tested and if necessary replaced. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I’m hoping it’s either something minor or the drilling of a hole will sort it. Should find out tomorrow then I’ll post the findings.

Had this happen to me about 12 months ago. The AA were convinced it was the battery, but on further inspection it turned out to be a dodgy ignition barrel. The technician did say that the he could still get the key to turn by gently pushing it in further, but we changed the barrel anyway. Wasn't too expensive as I seem to recall and no issues since. Life is what happens while you�re making other plans.

I’m really hoping it could be this.

It’s putting codes up for the airbag, fault with the key and fault with the steering. I assume they’re all connected

Had a slight update on the car Saturday. Car is starting fine today although nothing has been changed. They’re keeping it until the problem comes back so they can have another look.

Garage have been on to say it’s now working fine. They’ve traced a fault to the airbag power supply and suspect that could be the issue. That’s fixed now but they’ve also warned me that if it is the column that needs replacing then it’s £4,500 for the part.

I do of course have the option of the DIY repair should t come to it as suggested by dingg1.

If this is a fairly common problem on 2002-2007 cars then does no one offer a recon of the faulty part?
