I'd like to read the TSB beforehand. I found an exploded diagram of the cooler referencing the new gasket and I suspect that the picture was lifted from the TSB. However a revised gasket from that used to assemble the cooler originally should have caused the cooler assy to get a new number which hasn't occurred so perhaps nothing has been done other than to make the gasket purchasable, which implies that the problem will re-occur if nothing else has changed, including where the cooler was replaced with an identical part.

The TSB states that the gasket between the oil filter and the oil cooler fails due to heat damage. Funny that this damage occurs on every 4.4 at around the same age and that LR thought fit to add the repair procedure to the 4.4 in all vehicles in which the 4.4 is fitted. The gaskets are obviously unsuitable. |

New gaskets now fitted, topped with RTC silicone then left overnight after fitting to cure before subjecting to oil and coolant. The original gaskets weren't protruding and given the deep groove in which they locate, I'm not surprised that they compress only a little then harden allowing them to leak over time. Oil on top of the filter housing indicated that at least the cooler gasket had failed.

Considering that the filter housing / oil cooler gaskets on the 3.6 TDV8 and the 2.7/3.0 TDV6 don't appear to fail yet are located in the same area of the engine, iI suspect that the 4.4's fail because the filter housing sits atop the EGR cooler. |

When I did mine, I coated the gasket and clean mating surfaces with a thin film of Blue Hylomar, a non setting sealer. Of course, making sure none of it got near the coolant or oil galleys. Mike |

OK, so took mine into the local indy to get the squeal and tick noise sorted and asked them to look at the oil leak that arrived the other week (I did the rubber rings myself months ago, so i know its not that)

Firstly I'd not use the indy you mention, if he's unaware there are infact gaskets (2) for the oil cooler, I'd probably not trust his ability to do the work itself.

just picked it up. The ticking seems to have gone, needs new belts (screeching noise). May get those done. Just need to find the diagrams regarding the oil cooler location/getting at it. Will take a blast through the wiki as well.

Out of interest, what was their diagnosis / fix for the ticking? (assume you mean engine ticking?) |

The indy may have fixed oil cooler leaks before the extra gasket was made available which necessitated the whole assembly be replaced and doesn't know that the intermediate gasket is now available. |
