I am currently Range Roverless ,its not a pleasent feeling seeing it disapeer on the back of a recovery truck.

I had the transmission failure that most TD6's suffer , this morning on the way into work.

The transmission apparently can disintergrate from 80k onwards so I suppose 119k is a good innings.

Its having a recon box and torque converter fitted and hopefully will have it back by monday.

In my case I nearly had a healthy bank balance... which always a sign of some kind of impending doom.

All sorts of different failures so hard to pin it down to individual symptoms.

RRRob, had you ever had your gearbox oil and filter changed at all? I am at 90k now and thinking about having mine done.

Hi the signs with mine have been .............

Hesiatant to change up ,holding on to gears to long.

Slow to pick up when accelerating away from rest especially when cold.

A general feeling of "unsmoothness".

I suppose its been in the back of my mind for the last 10k miles or so that things didn't feel quite right.

Up until I started lurking and subsequently joining on here I thought it was a sealed for life unit as Landrover say it is, the posts from people on here brought to my attention that it is not and that transmission fluids and filters should be changed regular.

Dolphinboy I wouldn't know what to suggest for a motor with 90k on it , do you spend out for a fluid change etc with the risk that potentially the day after the transmission failing.
How much more life a fluid change would give your transmission I dont know.

Perhaps bank the cost and put it towards the £1600-2000 cost of a replacement transmission that you will need. Are you keeping the RR for a while yet or planning on changing it ? that is another factor in what you do.

I am planning on keeping mine for a good few years yet as I will never be in the position to trade up to another FFRR so the expense of the repair is better to take as I will be reaping the rewards for many miles in the future.

So at the moment the drive is empty and the FF at the menders . Its an odd feeling

Thanks for that RRRob. I have to say mine is running "sweet as" but the box filter and oil change is only a couple of hundred of spuds and local. Dan_1984_uk had his done there so I know it's good!

Reckon mine is gonna be a keeper as it's not put a foot wrong in nearly 2 years and has everything I need (although a 3.6 or 4.4 TDV8 engine would be nice!)

Fluid and filter changed £140

Then eventually full box strip down and rebuild everything you can £2920 (including the output shaft to the transfer box)

Both by well reputed local specialists in autos. Ooo that reminds me.. need to book it in for its 1000 mile look over, just to check their are no leaks etc.. which there aren't but the select cable could do with a slight minor adjustment, no biggy. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

The thing with autoboxes is that the fluid does deteriorate and when it does it contaminated valves, internal oilways and brake bands etc. This can only serve to shorten the life of the box. Sticky valves make for hesitant changes etc.

Think about the engine for a moment. If you never changed the oil then the engine would have a markedly shorter life, yes?

Yes it's different oil and yes it does a different job but the principles of contaminated fluid are fairly constant. If it makes all the internals of the box work harder then the service life will be shortened. Burnt fluid contains lots of contaminants which are not caught by the strainer. Lots of referrals to the 'filter' but it is only a strainer in reality and is not designed to filter down to the same level as the engine oil filter. Again, think about the engine; it has a strainer on the oil pickup in the sump and then it has a filter as well. The box does not.

Thinking about the ZF 6 speed which LR claim to be sealed for life, well I've had 2 cars with this box, one which I left as it was and one which I had megaflushed. I know which was the better box at 90k miles.

If it was mine I'd spend the 200 quid and get the fluid changed. Won't do any harm and will very probably increase the life of the box by a big margin.

I agree with above, of course as most of it I have already said in various previous posts.

The manufacturer recommends changing the oil at 50K, if you run it to 100K you shouldn't be surprised if you have a failure.

This isn't helped by the "filled for life" stance LR have - however what they mean is "life of the warranty" They WANT you to be back in 5+ years time for a new gearbox. It's a good profit to them, compared to the lower margins on the cars themselves.

All seems as it should be, I also notice the MPG seems to have risen as well, considerably. I will monitor over the next week and get an exact figure through the pump rather than the on board computer.

Is there a "how to" on changing the trans fluid on a TD6 somewhere and is it possible to do without ramps/lifts.

I'de happily undertake it myself if was a diy job one weekend. Mines on 48K now so best to keep it in tip top shape. Ash

It's not a big job but you need to raise the vehicle to remove the gearbox sump
