Brake disc and pads

Another quick question, The place i got the car from replaced the front pads (about 5k ago, but checking on the MOT etc, it shows that the front discs are half gone, so i want to replace them, is it best to replace the disc and pads, or can i just do the discs?

Since there is some disc left I would start shopping around for new disc and pads. Often good deals can be found this way rather than buying straight away. What doesn't kill you is just bidding it's time.

Sorry, got it wrong, the rear are half gone, its the fronts that have the bad cavitation and squeal like a pain in the a$$.

got a price for LR parts, disc and pads all round, Not cheap, so thinking of Brembo discs for front, delph on the rear, then its which pads Sad

Seem to read/hear different stories about all, some say they squeal, so same never had an issue. Either way, need to get it sorted in the next couple of weeks before the next trip

If there is plenty of material left on the pads and the discs don't look to bad you could just have so grit trapped which just requires removing the pads and cleaning them and the discs up. I had this after coming of a beach in Cornwall. What doesn't kill you is just bidding it's time.

Last quick question before i try to clean/re-grease them, I have 3 tonne axle stands (for the pair, not each) are they alright, or better to get heavy duty ones?

Cool, will have a clean up tomorrow if the weather holds, see if it cures it, if not, new disc and pads it will be.

I Just did my rear discs and pads a few weeks back, but found fuel consumption dropped and warm wheels.

What had happened, as the pistons were pushed back in they had partially seized, dragging on the disc.

Worth checking by jacking up and spinning the disc after a few miles of bedding in, or if your pistons look a bit corroded, change the calliper, its quite quick and easy to do.
I see quite a few places ask for them as exchange but I bought mine outright, so thinking about shot blasting them and refurbishing them, or just passing them on, or scrap them!

My fuel consumption went up about 8mpg to over 30 mpg! at that rate it will pay back the cost of the callipers quite quickly

Going to try cleaning them out and re-grease first, see if that helps, if not, i will replace disc and pads. Thanks for all the info guys.

I Replaced my front disks and pads today with pagid ones
I waited for a sale at euro car parts and got them 50% off Cool

Mine were squealing. On taking the pads out they are about 70% worn, and the disks lipped about 1 to 2mm each side.

A couple of things to note.
The caliper on my 2010 car is held on with a 21mm bihex head bolt, so make sure you have a socket to fit.
Also my wheel nuts had swollen, and some were a right pig to get off.

All info most welcome. I had the front nuts replaced when they did the brake pipes last month. so they should be fine. Looks like an easy quick job to try the pads first, as i don't think you need to take the caliper off. But if this fails, disc and pads it will be, along with caliper check.

Well what can i say. Went to do them today, got one side ready to be jacked up, went to do the other side and the Censored locking wheel nut key has broken Censored

Fingers crossed i don't get a puncture before i can get a new one sorted. Censored

Is there a number registered with the locking nut key? and where do you find it?
