Very disturbing engine noise from cold!

Yesterday I started my TD6 up and the engine instantly started making a very loud clunking noise and was throwing out lots of black smoke and oil. I probably did the wrong thing but I kept it running to which it continued to sound like it was near death then cut out. I started it up again, after a few minutes it was fine, as normal! Oil levels are fine and as a tester I drove it round most of the day. The same thing has happened again today, it's as though there's oil draining from somewhere that it shouldn't when it's been stood for a long period of time. Any ideas guys??

Loud/rough clunking says possibly big end bearings to me. Could it be that the oil pump is dodgy or the delivery channels are blocked starving the shell bearings of oil? May explain why as the engine got to temp it seemed to smooth off. I'd definitely not have driven it though!

Anyhow I'm sure proper advice will be along soon. I hope it's not the bearings and it's something cheaper.

Does the oil pump have a non return valve in a diesel? Maybe this has failed?

Where is the oil coming from? Could be oil leaking past the seals / bearings on the turbo in which case you can expect this to happen

So I'd be inclined to get someone to check it over who knows there way around a FFRR.

If it does run on its own oil your only hope is to deprive the car of air and stall it... By the time you get around to getting access to do this it'll probably be too late.

Not entirely sure what engine is in the X5 but a pound to a pinch its a TD6

Hi Guys,

luckily the scenes on my drive the past 2 mornings have not measured up to the X5 link Shocked The car would still rev on demand and also shut down when revs were off, engine would stop on the key. I trailered it over to my main man (the indy who didn't rob me for a new compressor 2 weeks ago) and he's going to take a look at it in the morning. Silly question but could having the vehicle chipped have caused this issue?

I'm thinking shell bearing being starved of oil personally (maybe because it sounds the cheapest to rectify!! Rolling with laughter ) but this could be why I'm an expert in wooden floors and not engines!!!

hmm shell bearing..cheap, used to build engines when I was a kid and had loads of experience rebuilding ford essex engines as they needed more bottom end rebuilds that fuel refills and if modern engines are the same you'll need to, at least, get the crank reground for a replacement set of shells.

So bottom end apart, engineering costs, rebuild....not too cheap.

Having said this oil leaking into the turbo as mentioned before?

Years ago I did have an Isuzu Trooper as a workhorse and that had a cold climate valve thing in the exhaust which you were supposed to close when it was siberia outside (whilst it warmed up), well going up the M1 mine got stuck shut and it looked like Whacky Races as, no lie, you could not see any of the 6 lanes behind me!!

Might be worth checking to see if the turbo's spooling up properly?

Ignore all of the above if ignorance of FFRR makes what I've said absolute rubbish Thumbs Up
