4.4 BMW V8 engine replacement!

Hypothetically, would it be possible to replace the existing 4.4 V8 BMW engine with a M62TUB44 engine from a 540i/740i/X5? I've read somewhere

Quote:

The all-aluminum, 4.4-litre V8 engine, manufactured for Land Rover by BMW, was thoroughly modified for the more rigorous demands of the Range Rover application, to provide safe operation at extreme off-road angles and in water wading, a wide torque band for off-road work and the cooling system and ruggedness required for extended periods of operation at maximum output such as in heavy-duty towing. The crankcase was also substantially strengthened for mounting the fornt differential. The free-revving, 32-valve V8 produced 282 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and generates 325 lbs-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm, substantial increases compared to the larger-displacement V8 it replaced.

that the engine might be modified! But other people have suggested that the engine was practically the same! No changes whatsoever! So I would like to know from your knowledge, would it be possible?

Thanks in advance! 2000 BMW M5, Avus Blue/LeMans Leather Interior

I'm no expert, but I would say no. I've had both engines, and there are many many differences. The modifications are very extensive.

Out of interest why do you want to change the engine? Has yours given up the ghost? Is there no chance of salvaging it?

I will have a spare engine soon, a proper 4.4 Range Rover M62, which I'll be putting up for sale. Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

The M62TUB44 is already used in the Range Rover. It's a varient of the M62B44.

I think you have to swap some of the lower bits over, but yes it's possible - in theory.

However I would be more interested in installing the S62 series engine from the M's, heavily based on the M62 design.

You've just read my mind! Whistle

While browsing found a modified 740iL with a S62 modified engine which pushed almost 650hp, I bet that power on a Range Rover would be Bow down Bow down Bow down 2000 BMW M5, Avus Blue/LeMans Leather Interior

I doubt the gearbox could take it - but would be fun while it lasted!

The ZF5HP24 is already at it's limits though, being out of a saloon car and rammed into a RR that weighs twice as much....
