Engine dies after hard acceleration

Hi all,
My 2003 TD6 hasn`t been starting too well recently, always starts but takes a bit more cranking than normal.
When you accelerate harder than normal after a mile or so it flashes "Injection system fault" and the engine dies. if you drive it sedately it doesn't happen. It always starts again but you have to wind it over for about 20secs, almost as if it had run out of fuel/fuel starvation.
Codes are P1260 Delivery Fuel Pressure Monitoring, P1255 Delivery Fuel Pressure Sensor, P09F6 rail pressure Control during Cranking, P1190 Rail Pressure Control.
I had noticed a bit of air in the clear pipes by the filter once or twice, so changed all the fuel pipe clips (one had almost cut through the pipe) and replaced fuel filter at same time.
Reading a few similar things on here I`m heading towards one of the fuel pumps, or both???
It`s done 160k, so I guess they may well be worn out??
All feedback welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Cheers,
Roy

As you have most probably read my recent post on a similar issue I would just change the external low-pressure pump. After a good run out today I am very confident that the new pump has solved my problem.
The injection system fault message on the dash comes up via the sensor on top of the fuel filter, try it, pull off the plug, then start the car and you will get a bong of doom. My low pressure was running at 4bar but I did notice it dropped to 3.8bar a few times. This did not seem to affect normal running. Find a cheap pump from ebay or if you can wait 2 weeks get one from China for 20 quid delivered. I am waiting for the in tank pump as well, even cheaper. I travel a bit into remote areas so need confidence in the car.
For now get under the car by the front of the NSR wheel with a 10mm spanner, undo the inspection hatch and feel the pump is vibrating/buzzing with the car running. If not give it few stout bangs with a hammer to see if it jumps into life
I believe these pumps can lose power hence they cant supply enough fuel when under heavy load.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies, injectors were checked last week and tested ok, but thanks for the advise anyway Mr Tee.
Also thanks wayneg, I did read your posts and will try the fuel filter sensor thing ion a bit.
Interestingly enough I also have the same gearbox symptoms as you had, I know its not a box fault as that was rebuilt about a ear ago..
Thanks again everyone

The gearbox must be a torque thing, it makes sense to me that with inadequate fuel supply there is less power so the box will be holding low gears longer and changing down on hills. My box was rebuilt 2 weeks before I bought my car and has 40000klm on it so should be good for a while. It is quite incredible the change a new pump has made. When I get a chance I will plug the laptop back in to read the fuel low-pressure figure to see if it's up on the previous 4bar 2007 TDV8 VSE

So that's the sensor that monitors the low-pressure side, If you are getting the warning when driving, that to me signals the external pump is dying as suggested before. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Hi,
Changed the in line pump by nsr wheel (which was leaking through the electrical plug!!!), cured the fuel starvation but not the starting, changed pump in tank yesterday and what a difference!!! Starts normally, runs better (inc gear changes) and MPG has gone up straight away from 18 to almost 23..
Although it did manage to completely (I mean completely, absolutely100% dead) drain the battery in 48hrs stood up. I`ve had the radio amp and blower resistor faults on my last RR and that used to take 5/6 days stood up before going flat,
but as said this was completely flat, and took 12hrs min charging to get life back into it, car charging ok and battery was old so have fitted new one and we`ll see where we go!!!
Thanks again for all your help, much appreciated

No prob... remove back seat etc etc.. Access is via both access panels, you`ll need long arms as you have to reconnect an electrical plug by reaching into tank from opposite access hole.. so less fuel in it the better!!
Cheers,
Roy

Rattly, Please advise, When removing the old pump/sender unit am I right thinking I can disconnect just the inner electric plug then remove the unit, nothing else attached? Once out can the hose on the pump be easily disconnected then reused or is it one of the hard plastic types that need to be cut and discarded, needing a new hose to refit. 2007 TDV8 VSE
