My camera may be failing which is not good as it was a mongrel to install.

It's washed out but useable during the day but, at night, the screen is almost white and is useless.

I'll put an oscilloscope onto the video line this weekend to check the video levels. I did wonder, when I installed it, if the video levels were too high and overdriving the TV module. If they are, I'll make up an attenuator (probably a voltage divider) to see if that helps.

If I have to buy another camera of the same type, I'll probably splice the wiring rather than pulling the old one all out and running a new cable. Ron B. VK2OTC

When you cut into those camera cables.... you soon discover that what looks like coaxial..... is actually normal cable  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I found something odd tonight.

I connected a CRO up to the video line from the camera and found the levels are probably OK on a normal video signal but when I covered the lens, I expected black level but I didn't get it and the screen was still quite bright.

I found if I turn on the parking lights, the screen washed out. I'm going to test tomorrow in daylight. The only thing I can think of (at the moment) is light leakage from the adjacent LED numberplate light is leaking into the camera. I'm using one of these X5 style cameras:

I feel a possible relay in the number plate lamps fix coming on  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Or disconnection of that LED. I notice that it occasionally flickers when the lights aren't turned on. Ron B. VK2OTC

Simples

You need to spend a minute with the IID tool or NavCoder and turn off the number plate lamp monitoring in the LCM... that'll fix the blinking light

And not sure of the Auz regs about lighting.... here in the UK they must work.... But you don't have front number plate lamps, so there would be no problem with them going out as you went into reverse.... effectively making the rear plate the temp front  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I turned it off in Navcoder as the error message in the Message Centre was quite annoying but the lights still flash. I'll have to have another look at that.

Do you blokes have front number plate lighting? We don't.

Re the law, there are two lights in the rear so I could probably get away with just one working.

I opened up the camera/numberplate light housing and found the LED panel had come adrift from its mounting. I removed power from the LED and tried the reverse camera again and the image didn't get washed out. So I sprayed some black paint around the clear silicone rubber holding the camera in place and tried again. The image wasn't washed out nearly as badly.

Tomorrow I'll make up a screen between the LED and the camera modules (there isn't one). It's a bit dark outside to do fine work (the wires broke off the camera necessitating resoldering. A mongrel of job when everything is hanging in mid-air and the solder pads are tiny.

The trouble is that it's 35 deg C during the day and not conducive to staying out in the sun. Hopefully the weather will start cooling off soon - after all, it is Autumn! Ron B. VK2OTC

Don't, it's been single figures all day, permanent fog with drizzle and just for fun the odd 30 minute deluge, more than once... not very good for anything... and to top it all I've been chasing leaks in frost damaged pipe work.... I've had more of my fair share of cold showers today

Still slightly better news for you bud, looks like you've found the source of the problem... you've just got to contain it...

And we don't have front number plate lamps.... but the reversing lamps are to signal that your going in the opposite direction to other road users (just as well as they aren't much of a driver aid in standard form!!) Therefore as the back has become the temp front of the car number plate lamps not needed  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Ahh, now I understand the front numberplate light bit. Are you trying to confuse a poor Antipodean?

You can keep that weather. Rain? What's that. I believe we are forecast to get some next week. Snow? I saw some once - on a visit to the USA a few years back.

I ran some Sikaflex around the LED module to close off any light leakage and a big blob of it over the camera on the LED side.

Reassembled and reinstalled and tested. No washing out of the image.

However, the image contrast is pretty poor and nowhere as good as the image in my wife's Forester in-built rear view system.

I might hunt around for another camera. Ron B. VK2OTC

I fitted one of these to a pals D2 and was impressed with the result!



And being divorced from the number plate lamp..... tobe honest it's only a few mm higher than the BMW X5 combined unit, a lot cheaper, and the version that I fitted had a slimline 4 pin plug on the lead that meant that it would all feed through a 6mm hole  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

How has that camera held up, miggit? Any chance of taking and posting a few pics of images on the screen during daylight and at night (with car in reverse and lights on)?

that is going to be a wee bit tricky as the car isn't mine.....

I will say that the BMW X5 camera that I fitted to my L322 was very good in all light conditions for the 2 years that I ran the car.... But I will add that when I replaced the head unit with a ping pong special the picture quality was 10 times better... just goes to show what an HD screen will do!
