2015 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Mariana Black
Non Land Rover Servicing

So I have a 30 month old 5.0 autobiography and have thought about changing it . Found an SVR at a main dealer and started discussions . All going well until they said they could not find any service history (Land Rover ) for my vehicle.

I explained it only has 7000 miles from new and I have had two services by my local VAT registered garage . I have the receipts and assured that only genuine Land Rover filters used.

They then said they would not be able to sell my car( offered in part exchange) on their forecourt and it would have to go to auction , and the price would be substantially lower.

Anyone come across this.

No - but makes sense - the vast majority of people buying from a main dealer forecourt would expect a main dealer history.

Personally, I prefer a good independent - and that’s where my cars go - but I keep them long enough that they’d go to auction anyway........

European Block Exemption rules mean manufacturers can’t invalidate your guarantee for not using a franchised dealer – as long as the garage follows the maker’s service schedule and uses original equipment parts.

However, everything must be documented for proof – even down to the grade of oil which was used. That’s because if something goes wrong with your car, the manufacturer may claim the fault is down to a below-par service – and you need to be able to prove that’s not the case, or pay a bill of thousands of pounds.

I’ve seen 3 year old L405 Range Rover for sale on MD forecourt being sold as A.U fully warrantied car with a lot more than 7k miles on the clock. I checked everything out with LR UK. There were no issues at all with the non franchised service history because the service and maintenance records, whilst not LR franchised, were A1. LR UK concluded that schedules had been complied with and the fact of the LR AU checks were a clean slate/ start again moment. This might be a case of the dealership not wanting to risk it.

Stacie Thumbs Up

However, I'm not sure JLR set used car policy for the dealer network - and even if they diid, they can hardly dictate a trade in price......

I am also not surprised they will offer less money if it has not been serviced by a franchised dealer. It is, in fact, worth a little less and it complicates them selling it as approved used.

Whilst I used main dealers for the first 3 or 4 years from new I switched to specialist independents who are slightly cheaper and provide a whole lot more quality, which was the primary reason. (RR London in Battersea)

Regardless, your 5.0 is hugely desirable as this engine is relatively rare, so it will fetch decent money on the used market, I think. If you can stomach the hassle (or have a mate who can help) you'll get a decent price privately. I am sure the buyer would be buoyed in the knowledge you have never had to make a warranty claim!! Sounds like the dream car to me. Alternatively, try a 4x4 dealer for a cash offer (Saxtons, for example).

Phone LR UK CS and ask. They could probably reassure a prospective AU customer not to worry if the selling garage is prepared to give it AU status, however, as Alistair says, they won’t be able to force a franchised garage to take your car in PX.

We all know MD serving is expensive and the same if not better can be obtained for less elsewhere, but we are also aware of the weight it carries when selling on a vehicle. Especially one so new and of such a high value. It's well known that the money is in the servicing for the MD network so I can understand why they would push for it so much. As for the px price, I can appreciate why you'd be offered less, if I put myself into the shoes of the perspective buyer and also the dealer selling your car then having full MD service history would be a much more attractive proposition.

I recently sold a L494 which I owned from new, I decided to sell privately and purchase my FF with cash. Every enquiry I had asked about MDSH, as did the dealers I approached for px prior to selling it.

This is exactly why I'd never get a car under warranty serviced outside the MD network. The amount you save in the service is offset multiple times come trade in. I certainly wouldn't touch a car, less than 3 years old, without a full MD service history. The important thing is the warranty on these cars. Having some 'unknown' service it brings that into question. Also got to question why someone spending 100k on a car is bothered about saving a few hundred quid.

Don’t know if this is helpful, but I exchanged my Defender for a Full Fat last year .

I bought the Defender new from the dealer, who had it for the first service but the next two (and MOT) were done by a local independent.

Main dealer didn’t bat an eyelid.

Maybe it depends on the dealer, or how easy they think the car is going to be to shift.

Cost of the two services plus the MOT in total were less than the MD price for the first annual service ...

Well imo its sounds like the sort of car i would buy, low miles and serviced properly.

That should sell privately.

This MD servicing is such a con not to mention that the car usually comes back worse than it went in and you are lucky if you don't get any marks on it. They are so untrustworthy. Oh and you might have to wait a month for an appointment. Censored
