Sump

Hi all,

Took the 2007 L332 FFRR SE TDV8 beast for an MOT Monday and it past with advisories.

Rear discs rusty and pads low.
Oil leak from sump.

Now the garage just quoted £300 to resolve the front leak as they said it will put the car into limp mode?

So is £300 a rip off or would you think the £300 is to resolve the leak and discs.

Thanks. Range Rover quotes.....

Assuming that they are fitting genuine parts, then the discs and pads will be about £200 fitted so they're charging you £100 for the leak.... bearing in mind that even if it's the sump plug washer your going to loose the oil when it's changed, I'd say thats reasonable..... but if that price is for a clean up and a squirt of jollup then it's a bit steep..... it all rather depends on what is leaking and how they are going to fix it...

The petrol V8's suffer from the sump plug stripping it's thread out the sump to fix that properly it's a new sump, but there are ways around the problem... it all rather depends on which bit of the sump is leaking, and why Rolling Eyes Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

You mention the petrol V8 strip the sump like plug thread. We did an oil change on mine last week and pulled the lower sump cover to check for bits of plastic timing chain guide in the sump (none Smile ).

We noticed the sump threads were damaged so the plug is back in temporarily with Teflon tape. It wasn't practical to leave the car and go and get the sump Helicoiled - so that will have to be done soon.

Does anyone know the plug thread size? I might buy myself the Helicoil kit (Dad had one in his toolbox but when he went into the nursing home, someone tossed out all his tools. Sad )

Had I been at home, I'd have had access to my vernier calipers and thread gauges. I estimated M12x1.5 Ron B. VK2OTC

I'd have a look at this!! http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic31702.html Either read the whole thing or look at this http://www.quickvalve.co.uk/

if you look at the thread sizes that they do http://www.quickvalve.co.uk/size_charts.htm you should be able to find the next size up so that you don't need to go to the expense of a helicoil! Plus if you have a selection of taps you can select the size you have, rather than having to buy a new size.#

And I can remember all the thread, but I think that JB Weld was suggested, any how that's what I'd do is glue the blighter in, quick valve that is Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Thanks miggit. I was right M12x1.5. I'll have a look to see if the valve is available locally **. Some UK suppliers charge a small fortune to ship to Oz, others are really quite reasonable. Quickvalve seem to charge only 3.6 quid.

Helicoil copies are quite cheap on evilbay.

** whilst I was typing this you posted the AU supplier info! Very Happy Ron B. VK2OTC
