cool, good luck Thumbs Up
How far along are you with the rebuild?

When i did mine i used the following sites in combination with rave to guide me through and i watched the youtube guy doing it several times over before starting.

The injector connector box you mentioned earlier does come off with one good pull once the two retaining nuts are removed but be careful putting it back and make sure you dont lose any of the little connector retaining wires.
i cover my valve train with a sheet when i am doing anything that may cause me to drop bits in there

I have the timing covers off
The cams are all locked in place with their respective timing chains.
I fitted the dummy timing chain tensioner, the timing chain is now reasonably tight
I offered up the vanos timing brackets and they fitted in place, on problem
I offered up the camshaft locks
The left side, I think, would fit if the camshaft locks were square, but that might be because of ware in the top timing chain
The right side, the inlet camshaft lock fits nice and I think normal considering the ware in the timing chain and guides
The exhaust camshaft lock will not fit and is I believe at least a link out,
or is it because the camshaft lock is not square
these two camshafts are locked together with a chain, the chain is tight, how can they be that far out
I went through this procedure to try and convince myself that the cam locks were right, now I feel they are wrong RR 2005 4.4 petrol

Where are the cams regarding advance / retard ?
Your vanos units allow for a certain amount of adjustment if I recall correctly and you need to loosen the cap head screw on the locking blocks to manipulate them into position.
I’m away so can’t see the procedure for positioning the cams but probably fully anti clockwise.

Contacted the local rover people today, this is the tool they would supply. part no DA1116
As can be seen, a straight edge could be placed across the flats on the cams
i cant workout what some of the parts do RR 2005 4.4 petrol

i would have to turn the exhaust cam 1to4 about a tooth clockwise to get it to fit.
I have removed the locking cap head screw altogether and tried to fit them inderpendently RR 2005 4.4 petrol

That kit is not for your engine, that is for the later Jag engines, yours is the M62TUB44 bmw engine.

I'll grab my timing kit out that i used and post up some pics to compare to yours

I tried to contact FEBI
I thought FEBI were made in Germany, I wonder

Your request was sent to me as I am responsible for the sales activities of the bilstein group in Australia.

My name is Stephan vom Brocke and currently located in our office here in Shanghai. RR 2005 4.4 petrol

I also thought that febi was made in germany but as with most manufacturers they probably have some product made in china but it could be that due to location they are responsible for supplying Australia, why did you need to contact them ?

So just to confirm you are at the stage shown in pic 3 but without the extra top clamps holding the cam locking blocks in place but your cam locking blocks are not fitting over the cams.
You have definitely set engine at TDC with the cam lobes of the left hand bank when looking at the engine as shown at 45 degrees and you have removed the hex nuts and timing plate and held the cams with the 27 mm spanner and loosened the torx bolts ready to align the cams or if you are unsure of your locking blocks accuracy don't undo the torx bolts yet ?

there is another procedure here that is quite easy to follow although using different locking tools.

The beisan website does it in a slightly different order in that they lock the cams in place before removing the timing plate and loosening the vanos torx bolts -

Install bank 1 & 2 camshaft locking blocks. For each camshaft set perform following.
Note: If locking blocks are marked in German, E is intake and A is exhaust.
Place locking block set on intake and exhaust camshaft rear square ends.
Adjust each camshaft position as needed to align for locking block insertion (27mm open wrench).
Note: Each camshaft incorporates a hex to facilitate camshaft rotation.
Loosen and retighten locking blocks matting bolt as needed to facilitate block mounting (6mm hex bit socket 3/8” / 3/8” ratchet).
Note: Bank 1 intake camshaft will need to be rotated counter clockwise opposing a valve spring to properly position for locking block. This is due to valve spring load and vanos timing advance.

Rock each camshaft slightly back and forth while pressing down and forward on locking block to fully seat and align block on head surface.

Verify camshaft rear squares inserted into locking blocks rear narrow slot.
Note: Camshafts ends extend to rear of camshaft rear squares. Thus camshaft rear squares will not fully seat to rear of blocks’ rear slot.

Thanks for the photo, that makes me feel better.
I can move on with it now, that’s if I can find one of the cam locks which has gone in to hiding some ware
The German solutions link is very good I think. thanks RR 2005 4.4 petrol

"why did you need to contact them ?"
i have been trying to buy parts, as cheap as possible but a good make.
I can find the left and right chain guide, made by febi, at a good price, but I cant find the center one.
I don’t want to buy those two and then find, to get the center one I have to buy the kit.
I got on to febi thinking I might be able to do a one stop shop RR 2005 4.4 petrol
