Apparently copper grease causes steel pins to seize in aluminium calipers?

I replaced mine (2011 with 50k miles) a couple of months ago and had exactly the same - what should have taken me a couple of hours at the most turned into a full weekend job to remove and drill out. Really pleased I didn't leave it to the dealer now....! |

Apparently he tried all sorts of ways to drift those pins out, they had to drill the pin a bit, split it and bend the sides in and out to break it and remove the pin, bit by bit as it was seized solid all the way down.

I'm guessing you haven't seen just how seized these pins get. I did dremel, and using a drift to get them out with the calipers on the car or on the bench would not move them, it's like they have been welded into the calipers. Even drilling them out was a heck of a job. |

Exactly what I did... didn’t cause me too much bother. Worrying about the copper grease comments as I greased them right up with slip. |

I've read that copper grease isn't the best for in around the brake area due to it drying up with caliper temperatures and that it's better to use caliper / lithium grease stuff.

Exactly the same happened with my last 4.4 TDV8 - and these were well and truly corroded solid - due to loads of salt on the the roads here. Main agent sorted for an additional 1 hours labour - cut the head and tails off the pins and a 20 ton bench press pushed them out with a drift.
