My P38

Had my 1999 4.6 HSE for 11 years now.

Have been very lucky-it's let me down once in this time. The wife didn't shut the boot properly, the battery drained and the BeCM lost synch with the engine ECU. Cost £200 to get it sorted. Luckily it was under the car port at the time.

Here's it being used as a kennel whilst kaput.



I've replaced the exhaust a couple of times, new tyres and had the air suspension air bags changed several years ago. Also replaced a tired suspension compressor this year-so overall-not too bad!

The battery is 12 years old and still performing well!

It is starting to fail, I've a leak from the windscreen for ages which causes a lot of condensation, recently the sunroof has started to play up and after having the BeCM I need to get the radio code.

Have been looking for several years to replace it with a Supercharged Full Fat, but it's always sailed through the MOT.

As I look out the window-we have heavy snow-as I'm always well organised (not)-the bloody MOT is up in three days!

So onwards in the search for a Supercharged-was looking at getting a 5.0 but will most probably settle on a 4.2. Must be Grey though!

Gosh what a great tale! I borrowed my mate's 2000 4.6 HSe to drive to London for a few days and it was awesome. Have to say when they're good.... They're the best!!

Mine is going in for some work to get through the mot I blew the head gasket 4 years ago so it has been in the garden. I replaced the head gaskets in the summer and the exhaust needs a lot of TLC internally to get rid of the mould
In the time I have had it 17 yrs its a 1998 it has had 3 engines two front wings drivers door tailgate 4 rads new wiper motor new airbags all round new compressor pump changed all the bushes and it has done 186k miles so it will be good to get it back on the road.

Sure there were other parts as well - its in the garden next to my classic and the FF will prob end up there when \i change it SWmbo has told me they are not coming with us to France so I said "Going on your own are you?" that prompted an interesting reply

MOT passed again!

Hasn't failed since I've had it.

May now get a new windscreen to stop the leak.

I've also got to replace the boot release solenoid-got one coming for £15.

Are you sure it's the windscreen? A common failure point is a seam under the top trim piece (drivers side) - it looks like the original design didn't make the panels quite big enough so they filled the gap with seam sealer that eventually breaks down and pinhole leaks form. A quick squirt of silicone sealant fixes it. Seems to be affecting a few of them now.
Getting the top trim off and back on again without bending it is a bit tricky unless you take one of the pillar trims off as well. The removal procedure is in Rave, but it involves the use of a credit card.

Thanks Kooky_Guy,

The Range Rover has gone in for a "mini restoration" with a very good local specialist. New headlining, door lock, majority of security removed, air con fixed, height sensor changed, windscreen removed and resealed, new battery (one on there is 14 years old), boot release fixed, MOT, full service, gearbox flushed. Should be good for another 12 years!
