Hi all i need to replace the rear tyres but the fronts have plenty of rubber left on them. My question is would it be best to have the new rubber on the front and move the fronts to the rear or have the new ones on the rear? Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

its a 50/50 drive on the FF so it won't make any difference...my personnel view is to put your new ones on the back, leave the fronts as they are.... ... - .- -.

This is irrespective of drivetrain.

Best on back. It mitigates the rear breaking away from you and tail sliding out which is harder to control in theory compared to understeer. V8 or else ...

Manufacturers say the rear.
But the front will wear out faster.

I recently put my new set on the front.
But that was because the old tyres had only done a couple of thousand miles so were close to new...8mm of tread.
So I have nearly new on the rear, and new new on the front.

'Best on back' is a theory I wouldn't have thought of at all. On a 2.7 tonne Range Rover I'd have thought under braking you'll need best on front. But I'm no expert - was just surprising to hear that theory.

Front tyres wear out quicker - and so do the shoulders. In your position I would put the new set on the front. If the other pair are that worn it would make that much difference putting the old set on the front and the new set on the back then they shouldn't be on the car. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

New ones on the back. That is the "rule", As already advised.

That advice must date back decades...... still a reasonable default though - most drivers can’t handle oversteer, whereas understeer is far easier to contain.

However, I’m at least partially with Vogue - as long as the other set are decent, I’d put the new ones on the front and then replace all 4 together.

You have to use a bit of common sense and judgement......

Don’t forget, people also needed to be told not to mix radials and cross-ply - though I still hear people talking about winter tyres on 1 axle, so maybe things haven’t moved on that much

Only my opinion but I always change all 4 and never go below 3mm just my choice -

thanks for the replies. The fronts have about 7 mil left on them so will just stick the new ones on the back which they are replacing as thats the easiest thing. Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue
