Got a strange one over the last few weeks and seems to be happening more often

So starts as normal and when you pull away, some noises and hesitation, like leaving handbrake on, but it seems to be from different wheels, rather than all 4 simultaneously or just rear

After 20-30metres or a few secs of driving it clears itself, then throws up the HDC inactive and then Air suspension inactive messages

Stop car, restart, messages clear sometimes...maybe it wont do it for a day or two

sometimes, 30 mins later, start car to go somewhere, and it does the same routine

started doing it in the bad weather, so I put it down to sticking brakes, but its getting more frequent

It feels a bit like the brakes are binding, like when you have sticky discs n pads after rain on some sportscars

Any ideas? could it be the ABS sticking the brakes on ...or just sticky handbrake maybe ?

it was serviced 6 months/4K miles ago and no recommendations on pads/discs or anything....

The only time I had that was when MrsJem activated the HDC by mistake.

Felt like I had run over something as differing wheels braked.

I noticed and turn the system off before confusing the car.

a battery thats not 100% throws up so many problems on the l322 mainly the dashboard errors...this would be my first port of call ..the RR has brake shoes for the handbrake and these aren't used much so when the hand brake is applied it might stick on one or both sides especially with this cold and wet weather...

My initial thoughts:

The car cant tell if the brakes are binding due to a mechanical fault, so the error messages are due to diagnosis of a Software fault.

The fact that the brakes are releasing after a set time would in theory rule out a physical problem (seized calliper, stuck stone, guide pins)

The link between EAS and HDC is vehicle speed (they both need to know how fast the car is going) - they both determine the vehicle speed from the ABS sensors, via the ABS ECU.


No actual solution for you above sorry, but maybe looking at what systems effect others will lead you to the dodgey component.

Personally in this situation I would visit a LR dealer or specialist that can read the codes (assuming it is recording them properly)

I have had something similar recently and it feels as if the traction control is trying to come in.

I have been getting HDC inop & air suspension inop messages whilst driving along but I have noticed that the speedo drops to 0 then starts to read again. The error messages normally go away after a stop and ignition reset but not always.

RAVE states that speed is measured by the rear left sensor so had a quick look at both my rears at the weekend, nothing obvious no damaged wires or loose sensors.

I think its going to be one of those quirky bugs where you replace on bit at a time in chain until it goes away

...really must buy my own pukka fault reader this month to save the trips to the garage..... cheers

ok, just in case anyone else gets similar. Turned out to be front r/h wheel speed sensor fault, so replaced, reset and so far so good

I'm not sure if this is related or not, but any thoughts would be greatly received! I pulled out of the car park at work, put my foot down to pull away and the car started making this grinding noise from the brakes, almost as if the HDC or ABS was kicking in. Long story short - 5 hours! RAC think it's the ABS ECU or the pistons on the brake calipers. Current: 2003 Range Rover Vogue SE Auto TD6, 2004 Mercedes C270 CDi Saloon Elegance SE
