As all are aware Land Rover used some plastic coated finish on a lot of the black plastic interior trim. Lower fascia panels steering wheel Nacelle , folding cup holder, electric window controls, seat valance etc. Unfortunately with age this coating fails and peels and scratched easily.
So I decided to refurbish them.

Firstly to get the rubber coated paint finish off, sanding is tedious, I found ( do this at own risk) that a rag soaked in Acetone and held momentarily onto the surface will cause a reaction with the factory coating causing it to blister, it soften the coating so you can wipe most of it off. WARNING !!!!!!DO NOT USE PAINT STRIPPER AS IT WILL MELT THE PLASTIC

I then used dish washing liquid in some warm water and a wad of steel wool to remove the rest of the residue. when dry you have a nicely keyed surface for your new finish to adhere too.

I purchased a vinyl paint in a pressure pack can in satin black from my automotive paint supplier. This stuff paints trim, vinyl and carpet. It does not require the use of a plastic primer prior to its application.
It dries to a pleasant finish. I used it previously on the black plastic on the seat valance and the results looked factory finished. Very pleased with result

A couple of light coats, if drys fairly quickly and I leave it overnight to harden. It doesn't chip and has been very durable on past projects.

Hi Guys, the product is a local Australian product, but I'm sure you would have something similar in the UK. This stuff is a vinyl paint, but it is suitable to use on some plastics without a primer as I have done.

In the UK you can either use Plasticote Matte Black or Plastidip black spray.

This was a silver trim piece that I resprayed black using the Plasticote Matte Black, you can see how well it matches oem trim car makers use asit is almost a perfect match to the idrive controller....

I found white spirit was quite good at removing the rubber paint finish.

I soaked mine in it then just rubbed it off. Didn't damage the plastic whatsoever.

Plastidip is the stuff you can get over here as already mentioned.

Anyone found any paint which matches the silver trim around the door handles gear stick etc? Mine has a few scuffs here and there.

I've just left the parts that were black and naturally black under the coating natural black. Some plastic protective spray and its good for me. I don't know what the original coating was or what BMW/RR was thinking with that crap.

Look on E-bay, Paints 4U do it, search for Range Rover Foundry Grey.

I'll have a look. Thanks for that as I thought I might struggle and was looking for replacement trims.

White Spirit is a bit different to turps.
But you can get White Spirit at Bunnings.

Oh, I see they are now in the UK.

I just had a look, and they call it a home dry cleaning fluid. One certainly wouldn't use turps for that.

I have a 20 litre drum (there's probably 16-18 litres still in the drum) of cleaning fluid in the garage - I use it for my Coleman stove (Coleman fuel is too expensive here). Its UN no. is 1271 which is different to the UN no. (1300) of white spirit sold here. I'll give that a try. Ron B. VK2OTC

I just had a look at the MSDS - it's called turpentine substitute. Oddly enough, the UN number 1300 refers to Mineral turps (Australia). All very confusing. The UN 1271 on my drum is no longer in use.  Ron B. VK2OTC

It's different in some way Ron.

We use White spirit over here in the UK like Turps in Oz, for cleaning bushes after painting etc, most households have a bottle somewhere.

I use White Spirit for silicone cauking, an old-school method with a cheese cloth pulled over your finger and plenty of white spirit (beats those silicone triangle tools).

But when I tried that in Oz with turps or metho it didn't work. Cheers, Greg
