Hi Mick - well, I've had it for I guess 6 or 7 years now, since new. I still love it after 90,000 miles. In a nutshell: Positives: Driving position and comfort, gizmos, performance vs economy balance just right, practicality, "toughness" (interior looks like a 15k miler rather than nearly 100k, and I got 65,000 miles out of the first set of discs and pads!), image (it doesn't have one... it is somewhat anonymous, which is quite good sometimes!), reliability has been pretty good. It is decently quick with the 3.0 V6 TDI, feels much faster than the paper figures suggest and it doesn't feel too heavy on the twisty roads either, does quite an impressive job of cornering unless you get too silly. It's also got me out of some pretty hairy weather (a flood or two, and some proper snow) living as I do in the Peak District. I've slept in the back of it with the seats collapsed (v comfy and a handy pair of 12v sockets in the back for the coolbox and kettle) and towed a hefty trailer with my classic on it - it doesn't seem to notice that it's towing, the engine is a corker. Negatives: Can be a tad expensive to run - when it does need work, the VW prices can be eye-watering. You need a good specialist to keep those costs contained. Dealer experience - VW made much of their "prestige" brand experience for the Touareg and Phaeton, but they've forgotten about it now - forget special treatment, you're lucky to get a VW Fox courtesy car, let alone something with back doors. My local dealer Smith Knight Fay in Stockport are not my favourite people. Ride - can be a little harsh on poor surfaces, for a car you might expect to be like a mobile armchair (perhaps better on the 18" wheels, I'm on 19" with Diamaris). Tyre wear - it seems to need wheel alignment more often than I'd like, and when it goes out of alignment it chews through tyres, though it will make them last if you make sure it's tracking true. Well I think the positives outweight the negatives - it's been a fine car, and my wife loves it so much I'm keeping it as her car now I've got the Rangey. In fact I'd have said it was the best car I've owned... until today, when I got my RR at last (wow, that's another story ... it's like floating along on God's sofa!!) |
